Bringing a pet home for the first time can be an adjustment, but eventually everyone adapts to the changes.  Probably, the most challenging aspect of having a new pet is training him to relieve himself outdoors. House training your pet may seem like an impossible task at first, but many others before you have succeeded, and you will as well. What follows are some tips and pointers for anyone interested in house training a pet.

You may want to keep your pet relegated to a certain area of the house until he¡¯s trained to do his business outside or while he¡¯s unsupervised. Basements and laundry rooms are perfect for this; anywhere he¡¯ll be less likely to get into trouble. Any area within reach of the pet should be free of items that can be damaged by chewing or scratching.  It would also be best not to use a carpeted room. Some experts recommend keeping your pet in a crate lined with old blankets or other soft, warm material. Don¡¯t worry about him being confined though, instead of feeling cooped up, he¡¯ll be comforted in his ¡°nest.¡± 

Knowing when it¡¯s time to go to the bathroom is one of the first steps to house training.  Does your pet walk around in circles or do a funny dance before relieving himself? These are signals you must respond to if you wish to house train him properly. When you see him displaying one of these signals, it¡¯s your cue to take him outside. It¡¯s a very good idea to use a term to identify the matter at hand, such as telling him it¡¯s time to go ¡°outside.¡± After a while, he will respond to this term in the proper fashion. Once you¡¯re outside, stay there as long as it takes for him to do his business. After he¡¯s relieved himself, praise him and let him know that he was a very good pet. Pet him and offer him treats to show him he¡¯s a good boy. It¡¯s best to bring him inside as soon as he¡¯s done his business. Once he¡¯s fully trained, he can stay outside to play for as long as he¡¯d like.

In order to avoid embarrassment, take your pet to a spot specifically designated for this task each time he has to go. Not only will this show him he has only one spot to use as his ¡°bathroom,¡± but it will also keep most of your property free from unsightly pet waste. Plus, it will keep others from inadvertently tracking this pet waste into your home. It¡¯s important to periodically clean the outside ¡°bathroom¡± area. If it gets too full of waste, the pet will no longer want to do his business there and will seek out other areas of the property.

If your dog messes in the house, let him know this is wrong. A stern, ¡°NO!¡± will tell him this is not proper behavior. Immediately carry him out to his designated ¡°bathroom¡± area, even if he¡¯s in the middle of something. This will show him the acceptable spot.  Some people use rolled up newspaper to gently discipline their pets, and some rub their animals¡¯ nose in the mess. While these methods may be effective, other experts recommend against this as it teaches the pet that it is wrong to relieve himself and may lead to other problems. Always remember there¡¯s a fine line between gentle discipline and abuse.

In addition to looking for signals, it might be a good idea to schedule specific times in which to take your pet for a walk or let him outside to relieve himself, for instance, first thing in the morning and just before retiring in the evening. If no one is in the house during the day because of work or school, make sure the dog is taken outside as soon as someone comes home. If trained properly, a pet will be able to last through the night or a good part of the day without messing the floor. Until then, give the pet a cozy crate or comfy bed for sleeping. Dogs don¡¯t like to soil their own beds and will probably keep the area dry.

Some people choose to ¡°paper train¡± their pets as well, especially if they¡¯re not going to be home during the day. Many experts don¡¯t recommend this for the simple reason that it ¡°overrides¡± the other training. First, you¡¯re teaching the pet to go outside, then you¡¯re teaching him he can go inside but only during certain times and it causes confusion. If you do need to paper train your pet, understand that housebreaking him will take a lot longer until he knows the rules.

It takes time and patience to house train a pet. In most cases, it will take a couple of weeks. The end result is well worth the investment. Soon you¡¯ll have more time to spend on those things that are important and all the training will be a distant memory.
