Whenever you leave a dog or cat home alone so that you can go to work or run errands, your pet knows you are gone. While many cats and some dogs may act independent and aloof, even they thrive on human interaction ¨C especially if there are no other animals in the home. It is important that you follow some simple steps to ensure your pet will not become bored, destructive, or depressed while you are away for a short amount of time (typically less than half a day). Leave on the radio. Animals get a feeling of security from this familiar sound. The conversations on talk radio make it seem as if someone is home. Even music stations can lend a feeling of presence in an otherwise empty home. 

Leave out plenty of water. Each animal should have at least one full bowl of fresh, clean water to drink. If you have room to do so, it is nice to leave water in a few different locations so that your pet never has to run low on water.  Leave out food, if your animal usually eats while you are away. Some animals eat only at set times such as when you wake up in the morning and when you return from work. Other animals, mostly cats, will graze on food throughout the day. If your pet is used to having food during the time you are away, leave it out or arrange to have a friend or neighbor visit at the usual feeding time. 

Check the temperature. Animals are susceptible to extreme heat and cold. If you are leaving in the summer, ensure there is enough ventilation that the house does not get too hot while you are away. If it is the winter, adjusting the thermostat and leaving out blankets, towels, or a warm animal bed is a good way to ensure your pet does not get too cold.  Make sure all windows are closed. Each year, veterinarians say they see a number of animals that inadvertently fall out of windows. Remember that even if a window is open just a few inches, animals often can slide into some pretty tight spaces. Window screens will keep bugs out, but are not meant to keep animals from falling out!

Close doors or put up gates to keep your pet in areas it is allowed and out of off-limit rooms or spaces.  If your animal is young, it may be best to keep it confined to a smaller area while you are away. If there are many breakable items in one room, it usually is best to keep your animal away from that room while you are out of the home. Any place that could be hazardous to your animal such as a utility closet where household chemicals and cleaning products could be stored is a place where the door should be checked prior to leaving the home.  Place all toys with removable parts, plants, and breakables away from your pets reach.  All of these could pose hazards for your pet if your dog or cat swallows them or breaks them while you are away.

Leave out toys that can be safely played with alone. Your vet or a local pet store employee should be able to point you to toys that are good at keeping animals safe and occupied while you are away. Catnip pillows and wadded up balls of paper are good for cats, rugged toys that cannot be torn apart are good for dogs. Hide treats throughout the house ¨C cats and dogs love to find treats throughout the day. Some pet products now let you hide treats in balls with small holes so that the treats will fall out as your animal plays.

When you return home, be sure to give your pet at least 30 minutes of attention. This will make the animal very happy and will relax you from the stress of traffic and work from the day.  While the tips above may seem like a lot of work at first, soon they will become a part of your everyday routine. The key is to keep your pet safe so that you can enjoy his or her company when you return home from a long day at the office or running errands.
