If you are looking for a challenge or a study of history, art, geography, politics or just for friendships or fun I recommend the hobby of stamp collecting. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, King George V and King George VI of Great Britain, as well as sports celebrities, movie stars and millions of other people were all interested in stamp collecting. Philately is the name given to the collecting of postage stamps. This Greek word means literally, ¡°love of what is free of further tax¡±. This popular avocation began soon after stamps were first issued. It is a hobby that has no hard and fast rules but can be suited to almost anybody.  You can tailor your collection to any interest you have. This is possible because there are so many varieties of stamps that exist today. It is an exciting hobby to be a philatelist because your collection is never complete. There are always new way to shape your collection.

One specific way is the collecting of perfins. A Perfin is an acronym for perforated initials.  They can be a perforated design or insignia or some symbol or simply a letter or a group of letters. The reason perforated stamps came into existence was because it was a way of limiting the availability of pilfering of postage stamps by employees in large firms which had a great deal of outgoing mail. Large firms were given permission to mark their stamps with their initials, etc.   

Perfinned stamps can be found in any kind of stamp issued by the United States.  They can be found in definitive and commemoratives as well as special issue stamps.  They have found Perfinned airmail stamps, special handling, registration stamps and parcel post.

Definitive issue stamps are the stamps on your regular mail. They are printed in large quantities and are usually one color and relatively small. They will most depict the U.S. flag or some historical artifacts or a famous person.

A Commemorative stamp is a stamp issued to commemorate a specific event, person or a specific subject. When comparing a definitive to a commemorative you will find that the commemorative is larger and more colorful. They are only printed for a short period of time so there are less of them around. 

You may want to only collect airmail Perfin, and then you will be called an Aerophilatist. For aerophilately is the hobby of collecting airmail stamps and envelops {called covers} that have been sent by airmail.

When it comes to stamp collecting, there is really no right way or wrong way to collect. Many Perfin collectors begin by picking a particular country and focus on obtaining each pattern of Perfin available.

Topical collecting is a very popular method of collecting. These theme collectors would pick a theme such as animals or railroads or a certain number and only collect stamps that fit into their particular theme. Your collection is your collection and it does not need to look like any one else¡¯s collection.

Some collectors are cover collectors. Covers are the envelopes that have been sent through the mail with the Perfin stamp. This is an interesting way to learn about the different organizations or companies that resorted to the use of the Perfin. If you want to learn postal history this is the collection to pursue.

Still other collectors collect worldwide.  Be prepared to spend a lot of time, energy and money on such a collection. This collection will be extremely difficult searching the catalogs and researching he auctions.

To get started collecting perfins you will need some tools to keep your collection in order. The first tool to purchase is an album to store your stamps in. This will protect them. If you are going to organize your stamps to fit your desires, you should purchase a stock book. These albums do not picture stamps of particular categories so you can organize your stamps anyway you want.

Another important item is hinges or mounts.  They are used to affix the stamps to the album. Never put your stamps in albums using tape or glue.  Hinges are folded pieces of clear paper or plastic with special gum on one side to attach to albums. Mounts are open on both sides.  Mount plastic sleeves are more expensive but are great for keeping your stamps free of dirt and moisture.

To keep your stamps in good condition you should always use tongs to handle the stamps.  These tongs have a small rounded or flattened surface designed to hold stamps.  A magnifying glass is also essential to identify the distinct details of each stamp. When purchasing a magnifying glass it should be one that offers a clear magnification to avoid distortion.

Another useful item is a perforation gauge used to measure the perforations on the sides of the stamps.  It is useful because the size and number of perforations identify some stamps.   Also needed for identification is a watermark tray and fluid.  Watermarks are sometimes pressed into stamp paper during the manufacturing process. 

It is a good idea to join a Perfin club to have a resource to purchase your stamps. The club offers the opportunity to meet and get good advice from other members with similar interest. Many clubs will offer auctions of members¡¯ perfins. This could be a good source for your particular collection.       

Some of the countries that have Perfin clubs are Australia, Bavaria, Canada, France, Germany and the German Colonies, Great Britain, Italy, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Sweden, and the United States.

Another essential item to purchase is a Perfin catalog.  This will help you identify the perfins available, cost and other options available for the collector.

Selected Perfin catalogs can be purchased from about three dollars for club members to about seventy-five dollars for a hard copy catalog of United States Perfins. Non Member prices will be priced slightly higher. 

You can purchase catalogs about perfins of Africa, Asia, Europe, Bavaria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, India, Ireland, Italy, Romania, Switzerland, Canada and the United States. These catalogs can usually be purchased though most Perfin Clubs.

So to get started with this hobby you will need very little money or space. It is even possible to get everything you need by mail, communicate via the computer and never leave your home for a lifetime of collecting.  So this hobby is for everybody the young and the old, the wealthy and the not so affluent. It is really a hobby that offers a lot of enjoyment and fulfillment for all people.
