When buying a PDA, or personal data assistant, the first thing required is knowledge of what features are available on the varied assortment available in today¡¯s market, and knowing what features you need or want. Your very first decision should be what operating system to go with, Windows Pocket PC or Palm OS PDA. Once that has been decided, comparing features from unit to unit will help you zero in on the perfect PDA for your needs.  

Pocket PC PDA¡¯s include:

Dell Axim X5, X30 Series:

Depending on the individual Axim, each offers 32 to 64MB of RAM, 240 x 320 pixels, 312 or 624 MHz processor, integrated Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, LEAP (Lightweight Extensible Authentication Protocol), and USB cradle.  Several of the Axim series can be upgraded to GPS navigational systems, bar code scanners, and a 1.3 megapixel camera. It plays both MP3 and MPEG files. 

HP iPAQ Series:

If you are looking for a traditional PDA that also will double as a telephone, look no further. The HP iPAQ h6315 offers Quad-band GSM/GPRS, WLAN 802.11b, doubles as a camera, and comes standard with 64MB SDRAM. If a telephone is not a necessity, the iPAQ also offers the rx3715, which offers iPAQ Mobile Media-Wi-Fi playback & control solution for music, photos & videos. Also included is a universal remote control, and a 1.2 mp digital camera, or the rx3115, similar to the rx3715, but without the camera. Also doubles as an MP3 player. 

Viewsonic:

This small, lightweight PDA has some great offerings. It comes standard with 64MB SDRAM, includes an infrared port for transferring files, or a cradle, doubles as an MP3 player and an MPEG player. 

Toshiba:

The Toshiba e800 comes with a whopping 128MB of SDRAM, integrated Wi-Fi, a USB port, and an infrared port. . Talk about functionality in a PDA!

Advantages of Windows Pocket PC include being able to synchronize your desktop Excel, Word, and Outlook Express files, without having to look for third-party software to do this for you. The familiarity of the OS with your desktop PC is a plus for those that are not very comfortable with change.  Every listed Pocket PC also comes with a Rechargeable Lithium Ion Battery, and a minimum of one empty card slot. 

Palm OS PDA¡¯s include:

Palm Tungsten and Zire Series:

The Palm Tungsten and Zire series¡¯ seems to have a PDA for every budget and lifestyle. Several offer Bluetooth, including the Zire 72, and the Tungsten T3 and T5. The Zire 72 also doubles as a camera, a voice recorder, and a MP3 player.  Palms newest family member, the Treo 600, also offers a full featured telephone with speakerphone functionality and a built-in camera that with the phone can double as a picture caller ID.  Also offering Web access, this PDA can truly do it all. 

Sony Clie: 

In the market of Palm PDA¡¯s, the Clie seems to have advanced the furthest from where they were. They once offered only the very basic of basics on their handhelds. Now, every new Clie comes standard with a built in camera, and a memory stick Pro Media Expansion slot. 

Some advantages of the Palm OS include affordability, though the gap in price between the two operating systems is shrinking, as both become more affordable to the average consumer.  For the uninitiated into anything computers, the Palm is by far the easiest to learn to navigate.  In addition, as with anything electronic, the market changes daily, so if you are ready to buy a PDA, shop around. Ask friends what PDA is gracing the bottom of their purses and briefcases.  Ask everyone what features are most useful, what features are not used, and what problems have been encountered in day to day use.  Besides those PDA's listed, many current phone companies are also offering telephones that double as PDA¡¯s.  If the telephone function is one of your top priorities, it may be to your advantage to look at these closely before making a purchase.
