Do your kids have schoolwork scattered all over their desks?  Keeping kids organized can be difficult, but giving them tools with which to organize is a lot easier.  If you remember pet rocks from decades ago, then this craft should give you a laugh, but it is still fun for kids to do.  You¡¯ll need the following materials to make these rock schoolwork paperweights:

-Several large rocks for each child

-Paints and paintbrushes

-Glitter or sequins

-Elmer¡¯s glue

-Felt in a color of your choice

Step One: Go on a long hike with your kids.  Bring a sack or plastic bag with you, and have your kids pick out a few rocks each along the way.  These rocks should have at least one side that would sit flat on a table.  Make sure that the rocks are not too large or too heavy.  If they are, they won¡¯t work well for this project!

Step Two: Clean the rocks thoroughly.  You can do this outside with a hose or in your own kitchen sink, depending on the dirty level of the rocks.  Let all of the rocks dry completely.

Step Three: Let your kids paint their rocks in colors of the choosing.  You may want to remind them that they will be used for schoolwork, because sometimes color coordinating the rocks works well to help kids remember.  For example, a blue rock could be for homework, a red rock could be for creative writing, and so on.  Remember to remind your children that the flattest part of the rock will be the bottom, so they should not paint that part of the rock as though it is the top.  When the kids are done painting, let the paint dry completely.

Step Four: Using Elmer¡¯s glue, apply either sequins or glitter to the top of your rock.  Try using both if you are really daring!  Be creative.  Let the glue dry before going on to the next step!

Step Five: Cut a piece of felt as close as possible to the shape of the bottom of each rock.  Attach the felt with glue and let it dry completely.  This will keep the rock from scratching any desk or table surface and prevent chafing of finishes.

Now, let your child use their new paperweights to organize their papers.  While doing this craft, listen to the suggestions of your children.  They may want to paint words on their rocks, like Homework or Top Secret Papers.  Sometimes, kids also like to paint faces on their rocks.  Try any or all of the above!  You can find rocks just about anywhere!

Tips:

-If you decide to paint faces on the rocks, string can be used to make hair.

-Some paints already include glitter.  You may want to try one of these in order to prevent a lot of glitter cleanup.  

-You can find felt strips with pre-applied adhesive on the back at many grocery or craft stores.  If you are concerned about scratching tables, this might be a better option.
