When little girls become ¡°best friends¡± they want to express their loyalty to each other by making some ¡°best friends forever¡± crafts. It makes sense to make best friend dolls because little girls love making crafts and they also love playing together with dolls. You or another adult supervisor should handle the construction of the doll ¨C the cutting, sewing, and stuffing. The girls can do the decorating and designing (the fun part). This craft will be a treasured keepsake for the girls to remember their friendship by. Here is what you¡¯ll need:
- 4 pieces of felt (the pieces should be at least 8¡±x12¡±)
- Cotton balls
- Brightly-colored thread
- Puff paint (an assortment of colors)
- Yarn (this is for the hair, so pick colors to match the colors of each one of the girls¡¯ hair)
- Glue (make sure it is for fabrics)
- Velcro
Directions:
1. Cut a doll shape out of the felt pieces (all of the shapes should be completely identical). You should make a very simple form for the doll so that you will be able to stuff it and sew it. You will be using two felt pieces for each doll.
2. Mount the pieces on top of each other (each doll separately), and sew each doll together, leaving enough room to stuff the dolls with cotton balls when you are almost at the close of the seam.
3. On the doll hands, sew one-inch Velcro pieces, so that the two dolls will stick together to hold hands.
4. Now that the BFF dolls have been assembled, it is time to let the girls decorate their dolls. The best place to start is with the hair. Help them to cut pieces of yarn to the desired length, and then let them glue the pieces onto the doll heads. You could embellish this step by supplying the kids with some ribbons and little hair accents from the craft store so that they can style their doll¡¯s hair to their tastes.
5. Once the hair is dry, start working with the puff paint. Sometimes it is difficult to write with puff paint pens, so have the girls practice on a scrap piece of paper before they start drawing on the dolls so that they can get the hang of it. Once they are ready, have them draw faces onto the dolls.
6. On the arms of the dolls, have the girls write each one of their names. On the hands, have them write ¡°BFF.¡±
7. To put outfits on the dolls, the girls can either use puff paint or you can supply them with some scrap pieces of fabric to cut up and glue onto the dolls as they see fit. You could even help them to sew some buttons on to make the clothing look even more elaborate.
Another fun idea is to have the girls decorate a doll for their friend instead of decorating their own doll. That can make the craft even more special. You might also consider embroidering the date onto the backs of the dolls or onto their feet so that when they look back at the doll in the future, they¡¯ll know when it was made. |
