Weaving paper into decorative items is easy. You just have to have in mind what you want it to look like.
Four quick things you can make from weaved paper are: a mat for a picture frame, a set of placemats, a decorative tray, and a greeting card.
To make a mat for a picture frame, you will need at least two kinds of paper (construction paper, scrapbook paper, etc...) in coordinating colors and patterns, tape, scissors, stapler, pencil and simple picture frame. Take the glass out of the picture frame and lightly outline the glass¡¯s size on the paper. This paper will be the base of the mat. Set the frame aside and cut along the pencil lines. Next, cut into a shorter side (if rectangular) or any side, if all sides are equal. Cut 1-inch strips almost all the way to the end, leaving a ?-inch edge so that it is all connected. Set the base aside and take the other pattern or color of paper and trace the frame glass on it as well. Cut this paper into strips, all the way across. Take the base and weave the strips in and out, alternating, to make a checkerboard pattern. Secure the ends with tape between the two layers. Once you are done, pick a smaller photo, leaving a 2-4-inch border on all sides and secure it to the background. Put it in the glass frame and enjoy!
Making a unique placemat is an interesting conversation piece or decoration for your table. You¡¯ll follow the same directions for weaving from the above picture frame project, but adding a twist to make it a little more decorative. For this project, you¡¯ll need two patterns or colors of paper (either 8 ?-inch by 11-inch, or 11-inch by 17-inch), tape, clear contact paper and scissors. Take your ¡°base¡± paper and cut clits in it to about 1-inch from the end. Next take the paper you are going to weave with and cut it into strips, across the length so you have shorter strips. But instead of cutting the strips straight across, cut them so they have a wavy pattern but when all placed together, it is like a puzzle. This will create a funky design for your placemats. Weave the strips in and out, alternating. Secure the ends with tape in-between the layers. Next, cut two pieces of clear contact paper the size of the placemat, with a 1 ?-inch surplus on all sides. Peel the contact paper and secure your placemat in between the two pieces. Trim the edges of the contact paper to create a 1-inch border on all sides. Repeat this process to make as many placemats as you like.
Another easy-to-make craft is a small tray. Follow the steps for making a frame mat and purchase a large frame with nice detail. Frame the mat, and put it flat on your dresser to hold toiletries or hair supplies, or put it on a table as a centerpiece.
Making a card is a small thoughtful gift you can give someone else. For this you will need the same supplies as for the frame mat, as well as a white piece of paper and glue stick. Follow the same directions as the mat, and then fold it in half. Measure the white paper inside the card and cut it so it is 1-inch shorter on all sides. Use the glue stick and glue the paper on the inside of the card. With that, you have an inexpensive creative card that you can send to anyone.
Paper weaving can lead you to a variety of different projects, ideas and crafts you can create. With relatively few supplies, it¡¯s also fairly inexpensive. |
