Fly Tyer
For someone looking for big, colorful photographic close-up details of individual flies, and step-by-step instructions for creating your own, Fly Tyer is the magazine to have delivered. Covering both freshwater and saltwater, my only regret with this particular periodical is that publication is only quarterly. Whether you are a novice or expert in the art of making your own flies and actually putting them to use, Fly Tyer offers something in its pages for everyone.
Fly Fish America
As the title suggests, Fly Fish America offers information on fly-fishing from coast to coast in seven packed issues a year. What is unique about this magazine besides their informative articles is that you can pay for a subscription and have it delivered, or you can pick up your copy FREE at just about any shop devoted to fly fishing nationwide.
Fly Fisherman
Ok, this magazine may win if a favorite fly fishing magazine just had to be decided on. While it only prints six issues a year, each issue is nearly a complete fly-fishing information bonanza in itself. A usual issue will contain articles on people involved in the sport, information on where to find the best of the best waters to journey, tackle and gear that will surely make your fly-fishing days more enjoyable and pleasant, even information on updated laws and tips on fixing your favorite but possibly broken gear. Fly Fisherman is a magazine, which covers all the areas that one may wander as they enjoy the hobby that is oftentimes more a way a life.
The following three magazines published individually, offer detailed information on the sport of fly-fishing in reference to their individual region. Because they focus on a particular area, they are able to offer very specialized information on destinations and gear. Each issue also includes patterns, instructions, and even a tale or two to amuse. If you are considering visiting one of these regions or just want to increase your pleasure in your current location, grab a copy of one of these very personalized magazines. Each publishes four times a year, offering winter, and spring, summer, and fall issues.
Northwest Fly Fishing
Each issue of Northwest Fly Fishing is written with Alaska, Alberta, British Columbia, Yukon Territory, Northwest Territories, Northern California, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, Montana, ,and Wyoming in mind.
Eastern Fly Fishing
This publication is written for all locales in the eastern United States and Eastern Canada.
Southwest Fly Fishing
Covers Arizona, Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, Texas, Nevada, Central to Southern California, Mexico, and Central America.
Online Magazines
Several of the magazines listed above have versions of their magazines online. Some even offer interactive bulletin boards to share your own personal experiences and seek help with fly-fishing issues from more experienced anglers. One magazine that is strictly an online venue is Fly Anglers Online, published and edited by Deanna and Jim Birkholm. A widely interactive site that features contests, bulletin boards, chat rooms on focused topics, a very comprehensive section on knots, a printable fish weight formula chart, a complete introduction to fly tying, and much more.
Whether you are a beginner or experienced angler, you are sure to find several of the magazines listed to be useful and entertaining.
