Have you acquired quite a number of fishing rods?  Are they leaning up against a corner of your garage or closet?  Do they need a home?  Proper storage for fishing rods is important if they are to be kept in good condition; tips can be easily snapped off, line can become tangled, and pets and children can wreak havoc on casually-stored rods.  There are many different types of storage available for the various sizes, types, and numbers of rods you may have.  Here are descriptions of some of the most popular ones.

A very simple type of rod storage consists of two plastic racks, each with slots in which to slip the rods.  The racks can be mounted on the wall of a garage or shed, or even on the back wall of a closet or on a den wall.  They can be mounted vertically or horizontally, and can save space by being mounted on a ceiling.  This type of rack is very inexpensive and comes in different sizes to accommodate various amounts of rods.  It is also available in more expensive and elaborate wooden versions; they often have foam or rubber pads that grip the rods.

Plastic racks are also available for mounting inside or on top of trucks and SUVS.  The interior racks fit on the ceiling and require a vehicle of enough length to accommodate the size of the rods.  The exterior racks fit on the top of the vehicle or on the bed of the truck.  Holders for surf rods that fit on the front of a vehicle are also available, and there are even magnetic holders that fit on the side of the vehicle.  Bike racks are also available in the form of a tube braced on the wheel; they can hold a fly rod for a quick cast in a mountain stream.

Vertical wooden holders can be purchased or built to hold large amounts of rods and reels.  Rectangular and round shapes are popular; each has slots drilled in both top and bottom pieces to hold the rods in place firmly.  Round holders are available in a swivel style so that the rods are easily accessed.  Most round holders hold the rods vertically, but some are configured for horizontal mounting on a wall.  Round swivel holders often hold more than 20 rods and offer rod grips so the rods won¡¯t be scratched.  

Canvas rod bags offer a soft storage solution and can be purchased to hold various amounts of rods.  Those that hold a rod and reel combination are made in a triangular shape, with extra room for the reels at one end.  Padding in the bags provides extra protection for easily-damaged rods and reels.  The bags are handy for transporting rods on trips, as they are portable and can comfrotably fit in vehicles or be checked as luggage on a plane.  

For added protection for rods and reels on trips, round PVC tube holders are available.  The rod tubes can be purchased in different diameters and lengths to accommodate various numbers and sizes of rods.  They are equipped with an end cap that is either hinged or snaps in the end of the tube.  The tubes provide excellent protection for rough travel; they can be put into a boat in transit, affixed to the back of an RV, thrown in the back of a truck, or checked as luggage when flying.

If you have a rod collection that you want to display, custom-made ornate holders are available for purchase.  Leather hand-tooled rod cases can be ordered with personalized engravings or embossed designs.  Beautifully-made leather reel cases are also very attractive for display and storage.  Although expensive, these exquisite cases would be good gifts for the serious fisherman.  Wooden cabinets can also be custom-made for the fisherman.  They are often designed with storage underneath for tackle and lures and can be made to hold a large number of rods and reels.  

Proper storage of your rods and reels will allow them to last longer and stay in better condition.  Storage holders can be purchased at sporting and outdoor stores, such as Cabela¡¯s, Bass Pro Shops, Gander Mountain, or Academy, in discount stores, online stores and auctions, hardware stores, and through catalogs.  Many custom designers have online sites or can be found through word-of-mouth from other fishermen or sports enthusiasts.
