Pets are a wonderful addition to any home, but where children are concerned, different elements are involved in making a decision. Several pets are appropriate for different children, but research must be done to help make the right selection.

FISH

Advantages:

Fish are a great selection for children, as they are not expensive to purchase, and are one of the easiest animals to care for. Fish can help a young child learn simple responsibility by remembering to feed - feeding only requires sprinkling a minimal amount of flakes once a day. A fish¡¯s housing requirements are also minimal, and an aquarium can be kept as simply or complexly as is appropriate for the child.

Disadvantages:

Fish, especially inexpensive feeder goldfish, do not have a long lifespan. Some parents may view this as a disadvantage because their children will have to deal with the loss of a pet in a short amount of time. However, it can also be viewed as an advantage, as it gives opportunity to discuss death on a relatively small scale before the child may experience it with a close relative or friend. 

Depending on the age of the child, the care for the aquarium may fall more to the parent. Cleaning the tank and keeping the water at the appropriate temperature and pH is often too difficult for a young child to accomplish.

Fish are also difficult to ¡°cuddle¡± with, and some children may find difficulty bonding with and lose interest in an animal they cannot touch.

SMALL RODENTS

Advantages:

Many children will choose a pet from the small rodent family, which includes mice, hamsters, rats, gerbils, and guinea pigs. Rodents are a good choice of pet for children as they are small and confinable, which means they will not take up a lot of space in your home. They can generally be purchased for very little, and are fairly easy to maintain.

Rodents are entertaining to watch as they interact with each other. These animals can be let out of their cage and put in exercise balls for extra fun. Depending on the age and comfort level of the child, these small animals can be taken from their cage and handled.

Disadvantages:

The disadvantages of small rodents as pets are similar to fish, as they have a short life span and may require a discussion regarding death.

Rodents, by nature, like to bite and chew on things which means a curious child may get bitten. Small rodents are also known to escape when not properly housed. They are a mainly nocturnal creature, which means their active time will be when the children are sleeping¡­and some rodents can make a lot of noise at night!

RABBITS

Advantages:

Similar to rodents, but generally larger, rabbits are another popular choice of pet for young children ¨C especially near Easter! As with the previous two animals highlighted, rabbits are inexpensive and do not take up much space.  Their lifespan is longer than a fish or rodent, and they also can withstand a little more handling.

Rabbits are slightly more flexible in their housing needs than a fish or rodent, as rabbits do have the option of being housed outside. Like rodents, rabbits can be let out from their cage and allowed to run free for exercise, which makes them a more social choice than a fish. 

Disadvantages:

A draw back to having a rabbit is if they do get out unsupervised, they are be very difficult to catch. An unsupervised rabbit left indoors will demonstrate its need to chew by snacking on electrical cords and the legs of furniture.

Some rabbits may frighten easily. A frightened rabbit will bite or scratch. Also, if rabbits are handled improperly or in an unsupportive manner, they may kick to the point of breaking their back 

BIRDS:

Advantages:

Due to the wide variety of birds available, one that can usually be found that will fit the specific desires of a family. You can spend a relatively small amount of money and still purchase a bird. Some birds have a long lifespan. They are easy to feed and have simple nutritional requirements.

Birds can be highly interactive. Some can be trained to talk, which children find particularly amusing. If children are careful and properly supervised, they may even be able to handle some types of birds outside of their cage.

Disadvantages:

Although birds have a longer life span than other animals previously mentioned, they are susceptible to injury or death from improper handling. Small birds can be very fragile and if handled incorrectly, can be easily injured or cause injury. Large birds can be quite boisterous and with improper handling can also cause injury by biting or scratching.

Birds can be loud, and if not properly put to bed for the evening, have been known to keep a family awake.

Birds do need significantly more care than a fish, rodent, or rabbits, especially large breeds. You should also be aware that the large breeds (which are often the most entertaining) are significantly more expensive.

REPTILES:

Some reptiles have been known to carry salmonella. Because of this, they are generally not recommended as pets for young children. It is suggested to wait until children are much older and can handle these pets without worry before investing in a pet from the reptile family.

DOGS AND CATS:

Of course, the big winners in the pet department are often cats and dogs. There are a great many reasons to love them¡­and just as many reasons to reconsider choosing them as a pet for a young child. 

Advantages:

With such a wide variety of choice in both the dog and cat families, it is easy to find an animal that works within your set up. Cats and dogs are great companions for children and will entertain them endlessly with their interactions. They teach children about the responsibility of keeping a pet more than any other choice of animal.

Disadvantages:

Dogs and cats both require a lot of care in their feeding and grooming, and depending on the age of the child, this responsibility might fall on the parents. 

Dogs and cats require much more money for upkeep. Vet bills, even for preventative care, can be high. Additionally, if you choose to purchase a purebred, you can spend a lot of money on a puppy.

Both types of animals demand much more space than previously mentioned animals. Especially with dogs that are active, you may need to have a lot of space available for activity to maintain a proper level of fitness.

Pets are an important part of childhood. They can teach responsibility and compassion for other living things. With a little research, you can determine what kind of pet is right for your child and will easily fit into your family.
