One of the materials you will need is fabric. This could be anything from vintage linen to flat, bed sheets. You could also use a tablecloth. If you get material at your local department store, I suggest looking in the clearance section in the crafts department. You can find some nice material at a good price. It will make the project easier if you find material that has at least three finished edges. This way you won't have to hem as much with the fusing tape.
Some suggestions for your hanging hardware include: grommets or eyelets ( these are little, metal circles that keep your material from ripping or fraying out), a grommet anvil or flaring tool, a hammer, rayon cording, metal or plastic shower curtain rings or fancy metal clips. You could also use clip on clips that can be found in higher priced department stores. Another suggestion is to thread beads onto wire, to make rings for hanging.
Once you have picked out your material and decided on your hanging hardware, you are ready to begin. You should always iron your fabric first. This makes the material much easier to work with. If your material has any unfinished edges, you will need to hem this first. You can do this with fusing tape. You measure about an inch and a half of material and fold this over. I iron it over so it stays put. Then you cut your fusing tape in 10 inch strips. Place this in the fold of your hem, between the material and then iron. This will make your hem. This will keep the edge from fraying when it is washed. Fusing tape can be found in the crafts department of any department store.
Next, lay out the material on a flat surface. You will be adding your grommets or eyelets now. You can find these in the crafts section of your local department store or in the hardware section at your local home improvement center. I suggest putting a grommet in each corner of the fabric first, then you can evenly space the remaining grommets. To put on a grommet or eyelet, you will need a hammer and a grommet anvil or flaring tool. These come all together in the package. I suggest you hammer the grommet on a cutting board, so you don't ruin counter tops, tables, or floors. Find the spot you want to place the grommet. Measure down and in from the corner about 1 inch and a half. Place the back of the grommet (the part that has little pointy teeth or that is completely flat) on the material and mark. This you will cut out. Place the front side of the grommet ( the one that has the long middle) on the front side of the material and through the hole. Then place the back side of the grommet over top of the material. Then place the anvil or flaring tool on top of these and hammer. Hammer until both sides of grommet fit together tightly. Do the other corner the same way. Then with the material lying flat, measure out even distances between the other grommets. The number of grommets used, depends on the width of your material. Attach the rest of the grommets in the same manner. The grommets should be no more than 6 inches apart.
Now you are ready to attach your curtain rings or rayon cording to the curtain. If you use shower curtain rings, all you need to do is thread the rings through the grommet and then attach the rings to the rod on the wall. If you are using rayon cording, I suggest that you use only about 12 inches of cording. Once the cording is cut, thread it through the grommet and tie a knot in the cording. Once it's on the rod, turn the cording so the knot is behind the grommet. Once you have all your cording loops in the grommets, you can hang your curtian on the rod.
Here are just a few tips to make this project a little easier: Always iron your material before trying to place the grommets. It makes the curtain hang nicer if the grommets are spaced no more than 6 inches apart. Also, the length of your rayon cording depends on the how thick the cording is. Remember if you have thicker cording, you will have to allow more length for the knot.
These curtains can be done in a few hours. They are simple and easy and look great once they are hung. The best part is that you can customize your curtains to fit your personality and your decor.
