Nikon, a company best known for cameras, actually got its start in 1917 as a joint venture between three of Japan's leading optical manufacturers.  In those days it was known as Nippon Kogaku K.K., a company that manufactured optical glass.

In the next several decades the company evolved to include camera lens production and by the 1940s the focus was shifted to cameras, microscopes, binoculars, surveying instruments, measuring instruments and ophthalmic lenses.  In 1946 the Nikon name was adopted for small-sized cameras.

Today Nikon cameras are widely respected in the photographic field and many different models are available, including digital cameras, traditional 35mm cameras, compact cameras and cameras that can be used underwater.

Before you purchase a camera, you may want to think about your needs in order to decide which model would work best for you.  Do you prefer simplicity or do you want to be able to email moving images?  Do you like to shoot in all weather conditions?  Is size important?  Are you more comfortable with standard film cameras or do you prefer digital cameras?

Whatever type of camera you decide on, you can expect to find features that include such basics as built in red eye reduction, built in flash, and auto focus to assist you in focusing subjects easily.

Nikon cameras also offer several types of lenses to enable picture taking in different conditions, such as low light or other conditions.  Other features include telephoto zoom lenses for full range sharp, wide-angle shots and a vibration reduction system, when it is rock-steady images you are after.

Other noteworthy features include anti-fog eyepieces, automatic film loading, auto frame advance rewind and mid-roll rewind.  Some cameras even come with a built in date function, which allows you to print both the date and time on the front of the picture.  If you are looking for scenic shots, a camera that offers a panorama mode is important and, for photographers who want to be included in the photo, some cameras offer a timer with wireless remote.

If portability is a concern, and this can be an issue for travelers, you may want to look into some of the compact cameras, with some cameras weighing in at just 7 ounces and being compact enough to tuck away into a pocket or purse.
