In today¡¯s world, with the availability of the Internet, shopping for a new vehicle does not have to be as costly as it once was. In days past, you were at the mercy of a vehicle salesman when it came to knowing the additional costs of extra features, etc.  With the differences across the board when it came to trucks, the differences could be down right mind boggling! Let¡¯s take a look at some simple ways to keep the costs manageable when shopping for a new truck.

Full size vs. Mid size:

The cost difference from a full size truck, such as a Ford F150 compared to a Ford Ranger can be as little as $5,000 to easily over $10,000. Knowing what you will be using your new vehicle for can be a great help in final decision making on size. Gas savings alone can be a major plus of a smaller size truck vs. a full size vehicle.

Standard vs. Automatic:

When truck shopping, simply choosing a stick shift over an automatic transmission can save you hundreds of dollars.  If you are comfortable with shifting, choose the instant dollar saving¡¯s feature of the standard. 

Ford vs. Chevrolet vs. Dodge vs. Toyota vs. GMC:

Turning again towards the Internet for help, look at base models in the size range of your choosing, from each manufacturer for some basic price comparison. Take into consideration any cash back rebate options, low interest rates, or other buyer bonuses that each may be offering.  Ask a dealer directly if a sale may be coming in the near future. If they know you are seriously shopping and may go with a different manufacturer, they often will let you know if a sale is fast approaching.  

Air Conditioning Optional:

By choosing a vehicle without options such as air conditioning, a CD player, or electronic windows or door locks, can save you, the buyer, not only money at the sale, but also in the long run. Insurance rates will oftentimes be lower, as the replacement value of your vehicle will be less right from the start.  Also, compare the seating from vehicle to vehicle. Options such as a fully electronic captain¡¯s seat for the driver can easily add $300 plus to the price. 

Floor Coverings:

Going with vinyl flooring instead of carpeting will usually save you a modest amount at the time of purchase. And, it may also save you again when you trade in your vehicle, as the vinyl flooring holds up much better under typical truck use. 

Color of Choice:

Always dream of owning a fire red truck but the closest on the lot is a burnt orange? Are you willing to pay for the color of your dreams? Think twice before answering. Ordering a truck in the color of your choice may not appear to be a hard task. The price quoted may not sound extremely higher, but double check all the features on the truck sitting on the lot, compared to the one they would order in the color of your choice.  To keep the price close, they may not be adding in all the extras that the truck already on the lot has. While a sale is a sale, a dealership will always want to sell a vehicle of a similar price and style from their in-stock inventory over ordering an additional vehicle. 

The New Year Models are Coming:

Sales on vehicles, especially an inventory reduction sale, can save the buyer thousands of dollars. Being aware from year to year when the new stock is coming can save you big time. The warranty is the same, and while the new stock will carry a new model year number and possibly a few new features, by buying last year¡¯s model, you can save yourself thousands.
