Hunting and collecting mushrooms is a hobby that is enjoyed by both experts and amateurs alike. A mycologist is a botanist who specializes in the study of fungi. Mushrooms are a fungus that lack chlorophyll and must obtain their food from the soil that they grow in. Toadstool is a common nickname used when referring to poisonous or inedible mushrooms. While only a small portion of mushroom species can be fatal if eaten, a greater number can cause sickness and discomfort if accidentally ingested. All mushroom hunters should follow certain rules and guidelines to ensure safety.  

#1 Equipment Needed for Collecting Mushrooms

Before heading out into nature, you will need to equip yourself with the following items:

A box or flat-bottom basket

Wax paper

Small garden tool for digging

Pencil/notepad

Field guide

#2 Identify the Mushroom

Observe and record several traits of the mushrooms you collect. The more notes you make while collecting, the easier it will be to make a proper identification later. Some mushrooms will change in appearance after they dry out, so it is best to take notes as soon as possible. Many mushrooms have look-alikes that can become a problem if the wrong species is eaten. First record the shape, size, color, texture, and spore print. A spore print should be done after you have returned home with your collection. Since individual spores are too small to be seen by the naked eye, you will need to cut off the cap of a mushroom and place it gills facing down on a sheet of white paper. Only use white paper for this test. The use of colored paper could distort the shade of the spores. Depending on the species of the mushroom, it can take up to several hours for the spores to deposit on the paper.  Next consider where the mushroom was found. Was it growing in soil, wood or moss? Was it growing alone or in a cluster of mushrooms? If the mushroom has a noticeable odor, make a note of this also. The date the mushroom was collected is of importance since mushrooms have different growing seasons. 

#3 Collecting Samples

Look for firm mushrooms that show no sign of decay. Collect two or three samples of each type of mushroom if possible. Do not remove a large number of mushrooms until they have been properly identified. It is a waste to collect fifty mushrooms of the same type and later discover they are inedible. Even poisonous mushrooms serve a purpose in the ecosystem. It is very important to dig the mushroom out of the ground. Do not use your hands to yank or pull it out. All parts are needed to make a correct identification especially the stem or base. The mushrooms should not be cleaned until after they have been identified. Cleaning can also cause damage or change to the structure making it more difficult to identify correctly. Each type of mushroom should be stored separately in wax paper. Do not use any type of plastic bags for storage. They will cause moisture to form more quickly and hasten the decay of the mushrooms. Mixing different types can cause contamination. Edible mushrooms that are stored improperly or for too long can become poisonous. Even edible mushrooms should be eaten in small amounts at first since some people may have allergic reactions. Wild mushrooms should never be eaten raw by anyone because they are too difficult to digest.
