Cigars are in the midst of an unprecedented resurgence in popularity. In particular, hand-rolled premium cigars imported from some of the richest tobacco-growing countries in the world are enjoying record numbers in sales, and they continue to rise almost every year. Both men and women are discovering the finer aspects of the cigar in increasingly equal numbers.
What is an aficionado? By definition, an aficionado is someone who is an enthusiast, a connoisseur. The word connotes a level of worldliness and sophistication, so it is little wonder that people find these pursuits attractive and congregate with others similarly disposed.
Cigars have their own accoutrements, vernacular, and culture. More people are seeking to become cigar aficionados and take part in events with others with the same interest. Large events involving, and sometimes featuring, cigars draw hundreds and thousands of people in ever increasing crowds.
Becoming a cigar aficionado requires one to acquire a broad range of cigar smoking experience, from which a more developed and discriminating palate derives. Typically, beginning cigar smokers gravitate toward a milder cigar as their taste is in the infantile stages, and the rich flavors are not immediately evident. A premium cigar should be enjoyed from start to finish and at no point should it become overbearing in its strength.
As the smoker becomes more experienced and comfortable with the milder brands, and if he or she seeks a livelier cigar experience, there are a host of premium cigars available in the medium-bodied genre from which to choose. Eventually, more developed palates often crave a cigar with a full body, one that might have been over-powering when their cigar experience was just beginning.
Being a cigar aficionado expands beyond the bounds of the cigar itself. Cigar aficionados pride themselves on knowing the perfect libation with which to enjoy their cigars. Whether it is a rich gourmet coffee to enjoy with a premium cigar while reading a favorite work of literature, or a well selected oak-aged glass of merlot, or a snifter of cognac, there is a cigar whose flavors will pay the perfect compliment.
Perhaps most importantly, after a period of learning and sampling, a cigar aficionado knows what he or she likes, and is not largely influenced by trends. Winston Churchill smoked ten to twelve very large Cuban cigars a day, while John F. Kennedy enjoyed a much smaller petite corona cigar, also from Cuba. Today men and women can choose from wrappers grown in Sumatra, Connecticut, the Dominican Republic, and elsewhere, binders and filler from the same or different regions or a blend – all offering distinct flavors, strengths, and quality. Individual tastes develop into different choices and outcomes, and a true cigar aficionado will determine which is most enjoyable for them.
Whatever cigar one chooses, the experience of becoming a cigar aficionado is a rewarding one. Since a fine cigar is best enjoyed in the company of good friends, along with the accompaniment of superior food and drink, cigar smoking events tend to be memorable, and encourage the aficionado to participate in more of them.
