The Mastiff is a strong powerful dog with a large, muscular build. They are very protective of their human owner. They are considered to be a "one person dog", but are very loyal to this one owner. The Mastiff has the demeanor of dignity and grandeur. They are a very regal looking dog. 

The Mastiff was originally found in England around 1791. They were used by gamekeepers to help catch poachers. The punishments for poaching in England in 1791 was death or to be sent to Australia for seven years to be whipped brutally. You would think that this crime would be avoided, but many people were starving. For some people, this was a way of feeding their family. The poachers had dogs that they used to help catch the animal. So, the gamekeepers decided they needed a dog to help fend off the poachers. At first, the Mastiff was too large and when they caught the poacher, not much was left for the gamekeeper to find. The gamekeepers decided that they needed a dog that was silent, strong and powerful. They wanted a dog that would hold the theif but not maul them to death. Through breeding different breeds with the original Mastiff, they finally came up with the modern day Mastiff. This Mastiff is made up of 60% Mastiff and 40% Bulldog. This dog has the power and fearsome appearance of the Mastiff. It has the tenacity, silence, and agility of the Bulldog. This gives us a dog that is a dependable, loyal guard dog.

It wasn't until 1924 that the Mastiff was able to be registered as a purebred. They finally got full registration in 1927. In 1928, the Mastiff was issued Certificates of Champion. The first Mastiff to be chosen as a Champion was "Tiger Prince."

The Mastiff is a large dog that is very powerful and majestic looking. They are a good natured dog. There very docile, but very protective of their human. They have a very dignified personality. The Mastiff can be high spirited at times. They are very alert when it comes to guarding their loved one. Because of their history and because they are a "one person dog", it is not recommended that they be a part of a family that has children.

The Mastiff has a large, square muscular head. The Mastiff should have wrinkles when showing interest in something, but should have no wrinkles when they are at rest. They have wide set eyes that are very dark in color. The darker the eyes are, the better the dog is liked in shows. They should have wrinkles between their eyes. Their ears are small with a V-shape. The ends are rounded and they should be very dark in color. The Mastiff has a dark black muzzle. It is short and square with nostrils that are spread flat.

The Mastiff should have a powerful, muscular neck. It should get wider as it touches the shoulders. It should not have any loose skin on the neck. The Mastiff has a wide, broad muscular chest. Their body is muscular and straight, but short. The Mastiff has a long tail that starts out broad, but tapers at the end. Also, dark toenails are preferred when showing a Mastiff. The Mastiff has a coarse, straight coat. It is short in length. The Mastiffs' coat should be close to the body. Their coat is weather resistant. Long, silky coats are very undesirable. They should have no fringe on the belly, hind legs, or tail. In competitions, long or wavy hair will result in points to be taken away. Because they have a short bristly coat, very little grooming is required.

The Mastiff is usually an apricot, fawn, or brindle color. Sometimes the Mastiff can even be a red color. If the dog is a brindle color, usually apricot or fawn should be the background color. The stripes in the brindle pattern should be dark in color. Some Mastiffs have a white marking on their chest. A small white mark is allowed when shown in competitions. Any other white  markings on the dogs' body is not acceptable. If the white on the chest is too large, points are taken away or the dog is disqualified.

The movement of the Mastiff should be powerful and should seem to have a sense of strength.

The average weight of a male Mastiff is somewhere between 110 lbs and 133 lbs. The female usually averages between 100 to 120 lbs. The male averages from 25 to 27 inches in height. The female Mastiff ranges in height from 24 to 26 inches.

The Mastiff is listed in the working class and is acknowledged by the AKC and other dog groups. The average litter size of the Mastiff is 7 puppies. The Mastiff has an average lifespan of  about 8 years. Of course, it depends on the exercise and nutrition that it is given.

Some health concerns of the Mastiff are common with other purebred dogs. They have ailments such as heart disease, cancer, and hip dysplasia. The most prominent is the hip dysplasia. Hip dysplasia is an ailment where the hip becomes weak and the ball and joint become worn and separated. It is an ailment of the Mastiff that any buyer should ask the breeder about and get proof of testing for. This is something that needs to  be considered when deciding on the Mastiff as the dog for your family. 

The Mastiff is a powerful and courageous dog. It is not necessarily a dog for the home that has children. It is a breed that needs to have obedience training and a leader that is firm and confident as leader of the pack. This is the kind of dog that is better when it is paired with an experienced dog owner. But if given the proper care and training, the Mastiff can be a loyal and protective member of your family.
