At Christmas time, kids are not just excited by the thoughts of candy canes and presents. They love to get involved into the season¡¯s glories with hands on activities.

Ornaments can be made from just about anything. Here is a list of some basic craft supplies that could be used to make Christmas Ornaments.

Here are some traditional (and not so traditional) Christmas ornaments to make with the kids.

Candy Canes

Candy canes are a special treat for Christmas. But they can also be a special ornament as well. There are a few things you can do with candy canes. 

One ornament you and your kids can make is to decorate a real candy cane. Adding lace, ribbons and even wiggle eyes to a candy cane gives flair to the candy cane. Get some lace that has bigger holes in it and weave the candy cane in and out of the lace.

Another candy cane that can be made is with a pipe cleaner and some tri-beads (a triangle-shaped bead). Get some clear or white tri-beads and some red ones. Use a white, red or other pipe cleaner if you wish. Push one end of the pipe cleaner through the bead. Leave about one and a half inch and bend over and twist around pipe cleaner around itself. Then push the beads onto the pipe cleaner alternating colors. Leave about an inch and a half at the end and twist the pipe cleaner so that the beads will not fall off. You can use a dab of glue for added protection if you wish.

CD Picture Ornament

Do you have old CD¡¯s that are sitting around taking up precious shelf space? Perhaps you have a few extra CD¡¯s that you could spare to make a CD picture ornament.

Place the CD on a flat surface. Take a small picture preferably no bigger than a three or four inch picture. Try to center the face or a pick a central point. Take a marker and mark a circle around the edge that you¡¯d want to cut out. If you want to keep the picture completely intact that is fine too as it will be decorated around. 

Decorate around the picture using felt, foam, ribbon and other such items. Drill a hole in the top of the CD. Be careful to not break the CD when you are drilling the hole. Use a string or ribbon and tie a loop. You have a CD ornament that can be given to relatives or hung up on the Christmas tree or mantle.

Paint Your Own Ornament Bulbs

There are plastic or glass bulbs that you can paint. The plastic bulbs are much safer as they will not break as easily as glass bulbs. 

Acrylic paints can be used for both plastic and glass bulbs provided that a base coat of a sealant is applied. There are specialized glass paints that provide a longer lasting effect and do not chip away as easily as other paints. 

Some bulbs have more than one piece, allowing items to be placed inside the bulbs before painting and decorating. These are usually plastic and they snap together. 

Most of these bulbs can be found at any supermarket during the holiday season or at any craft and hobby supply shop. 

Homemade Dough Ornaments

There are dozens of recipes to make your own dough. This dough can be made, formed, hardened (air dried or baked) and painted or decorated to make ornaments for the Christmas tree. 

Recipe for Salt Dough

For every two cups of flour, add one cup of table salt and two tablespoons of vegetable oil. Add water slowly and mix until the consistency is about that of clay or about a one-half cup to a three-fourths cup. Mix well. This amount makes about fifteen to twenty smaller size ornaments. 

Scents can be added to the dough. You can add cinnamon, food coloring for colors, and oil extracts for other smells. You can experiment to see which are better. 

Use cookie cutters to make ornaments or roll out the dough and cut into the desired shapes. Poke a hole in the top so there is a place for the string to be pushed through. 

Bake the dough for about an hour to an hour and a half at 200 degrees. Make sure the dough is not too thick or it may crack. 

After the dough has been dried and cooled, you can paint the dough. Tie a string through the hole in the top and you have another ornament.

Other ornament ideas:

1.  Take a pom-pom and add wiggle eyes, a pair of felt feet and a string. You can glue pipe cleaner antennae too. 

2.  You can make many ornaments from craft sticks or popsicle sticks. Make a pair of skis or a snowboard using a craft stick. Add a ribbon or other decoration and tie a string to it. 

3.  Take individually wrapped candies. You can bag them yourself using small baggies or cellophane and a ribbon to tie it closed. Add a ribbon or a metal hook and hang them on the tree just as you would a candy cane.

4.  Make your own garland using beads and string/yarn. Take the string or yarn and start threading on the beads. Make it to the desired length and either glue the end pieces of the yarn onto the beads or tie a knot that won¡¯t slip through the bead.

5.  You can also make a paper garland. Take small strips of paper about an inch in diameter and at least six inches long. Make a loop with the paper strip and fasten with glue or a stapler. Take another strip and make a loop with it, only push it through the other loop first and then fasten it. Continue this until you have the desired length of garland.
