When choosing satin fabric for making dressy pants, look for a heavier weight satin.  To make a pair with a ruffled inset, look for a pattern that features a front yoke.  This yoke can either be straight across the front, or angled down at the center.  For best results, choose a smooth front style that does not feature a front fly or other opening.  Pants with a back zipper will be the easiest style to work with.  Cut out the pattern pieces according to the pattern instructions.

Using extra satin fabric, cut a strip along the grain twice as long as the seam between the yoke and the front pant piece.  Cut one strip for each side.  These strips will become the ruffles.  Each strip should be 3-1/4 inches wide.  Fold the strip in half lengthwise with the right side of the fabric facing out.  Press the strips, being careful not to have the iron too hot for the fabric.

On the sewing machine, loosen the tension and set the stitch length at the longest length.  Stitch through both layers of the strip once 5/8 inch from the raw edge, and again 3/8 inch from the raw edge.  Pull the bobbin threads to gather the ruffle to the length needed to fit in the yoke seam.  Repeat for the other ruffle.  If you use matching thread, you may not need to remove it when the pants are assembled.  On the other hand, if you use a contrasting colored thread for this step, you will be able to see it well enough to pick it out with a seam ripper.  It's your choice.

Now assemble the pant fronts.  With right sides together, match the yoke piece to the front pant piece.  Slip the ruffle in between the two pieces so that the raw edges all match.  Remember to reset the tension and stitch length on you machine for regular stitching.  Pin in place and sew a 5/8 inch seam.  When inserting a ruffle in this manner, it is easy to accidentally catch the loose part of the ruffle in the seam.  To avoid this, slip your left hand between the layers and gently pull the ruffle to the inside as you go.  Repeat the process to attach the ruffle to the other side.  For a neat finish, topstitch an eighth of an inch above the ruffle.

Finish sewing the pants, catching the ends of the ruffles in the center and side seams.  Make sure the ruffles are pointing down.  If the gathering stitches show, pick them out with a small seam ripper.

For extra embellishment, you could insert similar ruffles along a slit at the outside hem of the pant legs.  Some pants patterns have a slit here, and some even have a ruffle as part of the pattern.  The slit will probably have a facing piece which will be sewn right sides together to the outside of the pant leg.  The seams will need to be clipped and the facing folded to the inside and tacked down.  To insert a ruffle here, slip it into the seam between the pant leg and the facing with the raw edges even, pin, and stitch.  Clip the seam and turn the facing to the inside.  Finish according to the pattern instructions.  Fold under the free ends of the ruffle and stitch through to finish the edge.

If the pants pattern you want to use does not feature a front yoke, you can create one.  Figure out where you want the yoke seam and draw it on the pattern piece.  Cut the pattern piece along the line you drew.  When cutting out the pieces, remember to add a 5/8 inch seam allowance on both the pant piece and the yoke piece where they will come together.  Make the ruffle and sandwich it between the two pieces as described above.

Perhaps you have a different sort of ruffle in mind for the satin pants you wish to make.  Instead of making your own satin ruffles out of scrap fabric, you could buy commercially made ruffled trim or lace.  In this case, you will want to insert the bound end of the trim between the pant pieces arranging it so that the seam will fall at the top of the ruffle.  The binding is usually only about 1/4 inch wide, so the edge of the trim will not be even with the edges of the pants pieces.  Instead, it will be 3/8 inch or so from the edges.  Pin the pieces and sew carefully.  Finish as above.
