Need a quick wardrobe boost? Make some quick mini skirts and you’ll be good to go. It’s easy to make several different designs in one afternoon. Purchase about a yard of material for each skirt for sizes small through large. To make a plain skirt measure waist, hips, and from waistband to desired hem area.
Fold fabric in center, lengthways and draw a pattern. Start by drawing a fourth of the hip measurement across the fabric. Now go upwards to draw the side seam. There’s no need to indent as you come to the waist area. Cut across the waistline using the same measurement as you did across the hem. Lay this piece on top of the remaining cloth, at the fold. Begin by cutting the hem at the same length but only at the side seam. As you start to cut across the hemline itself arc outward somewhat before coming back up to meet the opposite side seam area. This arc allows skirts to hang properly in the back rather than ride upwards while wearing.
Place the two pieces together and sew one side seam. Now sew across the entire hem. Next use a piece of half-inch elastic, cut to 4" longer than the waist measurement, for the waistband. To do this wrap the edge of the waistline over the elastic once then turn the elastic and fabric over one more time. This will hide the raw edge and cover the elastic. Sew across the underside of the skirt at the bottom elastic edge. If desired, go back and sew across the top edge as well for a more defined waistband. Now sew the last side seam and your skirt is ready.
A different version of the same skirt is to cut it a little shorter then add an extension at the hemline. Complete the entire skirt. Now add the extension which could be lace or a coordinating fabric. This will look like a skirt under a skirt. Sew the hem of the extension, all the way across, leaving the first few inches unattached. Now sew the raw edge to the underside of the hem. Just before the end remove from under the presser foot. Place the right sides together on the ends of the extension. Seam. Now put the hemline back under the presser foot and finish sewing the extension to the hem.
These extensions can be added on in almost any number and can be frilly rather than straight. Cut the first piece of the skirt from waistline to the start of the hips. Measure across the front of the skirt and cut the first extension three times this measurement. Hem one edge of the extension and baste the top edge. Pull the basting threads while gathering the extension. When it’s gathered to the proper size sew it into the hemline area of the first piece. An easier way to gather the extension is to fold it in half and mark that area at the top raw edge. Fold in half again and mark those areas. Fold and mark one more time. Do the same to the hem area of the skirt, folding and marking each fold. Now align the marks from the extension with the marks of the skirt. Make tiny pleats in the extension while sewing and aligning the hemline marks. Add the next extension in the same manner. |
