Paper mache (or papier-mâché) is the process by which strips of glue-saturated paper are molded to a form. When dried, the paper strips permanently take on the shape of that form. There are many adult paper mache artists who are able produce unbelievably beautiful and complex forms. The soft and non-toxic nature of the materials, however, makes this a perfect craft for kids, as well.

The project described here, a head shaped from a balloon, is a great introduction to the craft and is designed for budding artists of just about any age. Parental supervision, however, is always recommended. For this project you will need the following supplies: newspaper that has been torn into (approximately) 1" X 6" strips; PVA glue; a balloon; a straight pin; a sponge; a plastic tablecloth or plastic painter’s tarp; a plastic bowl; a rectangular foil pan; paintbrushes; and, a colorful assortment of water-based paint. It is very important that the newspaper be torn and not cut, as the resulting uneven edges will bind with the paper strips to create a smoother surface for your project.

Before you begin, create a work surface that will protect the table upon which you are working. Do not cover the surface with newspaper, as it will most likely stick to the strips you are working with. Instead, use a plastic tablecloth or painter's tarp to cover the surface. These are cheap, easy to find, and can be rinsed off and stored away for future use.

1. Blow up your balloon to the desired size and rest it inside the plastic bowl. This will help support the balloon while you apply the paper strips and will give the completed form a stable place to dry.

2. Make the paper mache glue by mixing one part PVA glue to one part water. The rectangular foil pan is perfect as a glue container because its shape and length will allow the paper strips to lie flat within it, if necessary.

3. Apply the glue mixture to the newspaper strips in one of 2 ways: either soak the strips of paper directly in the glue mixture or use a sponge to apply the glue mixture to the paper. If you choose the first method, soak the strips a few at a time for a minute or two. As you remove each strip from the mixture, pull it between your free thumb and forefinger to remove any excess. If using the second method, lay out a few paper strips onto your work surface. Dip a sponge into the glue mixture and then apply it directly to the paper, making sure to coat both sides. As with the first method, remove any excess glue mixture with your free thumb and forefinger.

4. Apply the saturated paper strips to the balloon so that each overlaps the other at the edges. Cover the balloon with one layer of paper strips then repeat. Leave a small section (dime-sized) at the bottom of the balloon uncovered.

5. Allow the paper head to dry overnight in the plastic bowl. Once the form is dry, poke a straight pin through the opening you left uncovered and pop the balloon. Gently pull the balloon out through the small opening and discard.

6. Decorate the paper head, as desired, with the paintbrushes and water-based paint.
