You can make many colors and styles of handbags as long as you have a basic pattern to follow. Making your own handbag can be as simple or as difficult as you want to make it. It really depends on how much you want to embellish it.

Here is an idea for a handbag that is simple to do and will cost you little or no money to make. The satisfaction of making it with your own hands is priceless! 

Square Frayed Denim Bag

Materials:

-Jeans that no one wears and jean scraps

-Needle and thread

-Sewing machine (optional)

-Scissors

-Leather cord, ribbon, string, etc.

-Embellishments and closures that you want to use for this project

Getting started on this project is just a matter of cutting your jeans up into whatever size squares you want to use, between four and eight inches is fine. Save all of your pockets, belt loops, and the side seams of your jeans. You will be able to use them now or save them for another project. Cut out as many squares as suit the size of your handbag. After you have enough squares for the front and back of the handbag, it is time to sew the squares together, wrong side out. Sewing the wrong sides out will make it fray. Remember to give it a little space on the outside for seam allowance. When the front and back is assembled, it is time to sew the front and the back together. Just sew around the sides and the bottom of the handbag, wrong sides out.

Tip:

Use different colored jeans (light, dark) on this project because this will give the handbag¡¯s colors some nice contrast.

The straps can be made out of a couple of things. They can be made out of two strips of denim or the side seam strips on the inside and outside of the jeans. The straps can be made shorter or longer; it is up to you.

Making the handle or strap:

If you want the strap handle, all you do is cut out four strap pieces (however long and wide you want them), and then you sew the two scrap pieces together (leave ? an inch to an inch for fraying). Repeat this step to finish the other strap. After you have your straps ready, all you need to do is attach them to the handbag.

Denim side seam handle

For this handle, you basically cut out the side seams that run down the inside and the outside of the jeans. When you have cut the side seams out, clean all of the excess string and material away from the seam straps. Take your leather cord, string, ribbon, or whatever you have, and wrap it around the thick side seam. Make sure that when you wrap the leather cord around the handle that you can see the denim through the cord. 

Placing the handles on the handbag is simple; you need to know where you want to place them. The handles can either be placed on the outside top of the handbag or on the inside top of your handbag. Either place the straps or handles on the outside top of the handbag, or place them on the inside top (for a handbag with shorter straps). Remember to attach the straps to the inside of your handbag body.

Take one of the pockets off the jeans, and trim off any extra material around the pocket. Sew the pocket to the outside front of your handbag. This pocket is functional and fashionable. 

The closure on this handbag is very simple; just cut at least two leather cord strings (enough so you can tie a bow). Take the two leather cords and find the middle top.  Place one cord on one side, and sew it to the body of the handbag. Repeat for the other leather cord. Tie the two cords on the handbag in a bow. If you want more than one closure on your handbag then just repeat the previous step wherever you want. Closures can be as easy or unique as you want them to be.

Embellishments are the last thing to do on this project. This is the best part because you can use your imagination to decorate your handbag. Try using leather and lace to embellish your handbag. Leather and lace coordinate wonderfully with denim. With lace, you can use fabric glue so that you will save time on the sewing part. Look around your house, and see what you have laying around that you can use.

This type of handbag does not need to be lined unless you choose to line it. Denim is strong and durable. For other handbags you create in the future, you might want to line them so they will be sturdy.

Easy Tip:

When lining a handbag, try using colored masking tape for the liner of the handbag. Colored masking tape will make your handbag easy to wipe out, and it will also be pretty and durable. There are several colors to choose from (not just black and grey).
