Hemp clothing and accessories, once a symbol of the counter-culture, have become mainstream and viable fashion items. With a few supplies and skill, you can make your own hemp necklaces or bracelets to fit your own style and personality.
Hemp twine is readily available from many craft stores and bead shops and can often be bought by the foot. Some hemp twines can be quite coarse and thus itchy on the skin, so they are not good for tighter-fitting necklaces like chokers. It is a good idea to touch the twine to your neck to see if it is comfortable on you or not. Many different textures are available, from coarse to soft. Also, the gauge of the string should be considered. Men¡¯s necklaces are usually made with a heavier gauge twine, while women¡¯s necklaces are generally made with a lighter-gauge twine for a more delicate look.
By far, the most common twine color is natural tan. However, twine now comes in other colors as well. A hobby shop or bead shop should have a few colors of hemp twine for you to choose from or be able to special order other colors for you.
The two most popular braiding styles are both made with four strands of twine, and specific instructions for braiding these styles (along with illustrations) can be found easily online with a quick web search. You can also do a simple ¡°wrap-around¡± style of weaving that is the same as doing a hair wrap, and instructions for this technique can also be found on both hemp jewelry websites and hair-wrapping sites.
Almost all hemp necklaces have beads. Polished stone and glass beads (especially multicolored Venetian glass) are very popular and quite striking. Also, to a lesser degree, metal and bone beads are used. Be aware, however, that many metal beads are made from reactive metals that easily corrode and can stain the wearer¡¯s skin. Use with caution, because the beads should last at least as long as the necklace ¨C a beautifully braided necklace with corroded beads is not something you¡¯ll want to wear. Wooden beads are also available in many beautiful colors and are a safer bet, in general, than metal beads. Also, there are clay beads available with many different designs that are iconic of the counter-culture, with mushrooms, smiley faces and skulls being common themes. Unless one wants to identify with this counter-culture, the use of these beads should be avoided.
Next, the designer must consider whether to use a clasp or not. The most common and popular styles are tighter-fitting, choker-style necklaces that are often permanently tied onto the wearer¡¯s neck and must be cut off. If you want to use this method, leave your strands of twine a little longer when you first cut them so that you will have long pieces of twine at either end of the finished necklace to tie together.
Those not willing to make such a commitment to a fashion accessory should consider using a clasp. Many different clasp styles are available at hobby shops. You will also need metal cord tips to attach to the ends of your necklace and the clasp mechanism you choose. These cord tips come in two main styles, the ¡°coil¡± type that wraps around the ends of the necklace and the kind with metal flaps that clamp down on the necklace.
In making your decision, consider not only how the tips look (because they will usually be in the back of your neck), but more importantly, how securely they will attach to your necklace. By taking care to select good quality materials, the time and effort you put into making your jewelry will result in a much longer-lasting, quality piece of ¡°wearable art¡±!
