You can turn any pair of regular old jeans into a great pair of flare jeans with a touch of personality too!  It¡¯s so amazingly easy that using a sewing machine is actually optional.  What you will need is a pair of jeans, a seam ripper, tape measure, scissors, a sewing needle, thread, straight pins and approximately 1 ? yards of the patterned fabric of your choice.  Fabric glue will also be needed if you¡¯ll be adding the optional pocket accents.  

  Choose a fabric that you like.  This is where your creativity and personality can shine through.  Although the project suggests a patterned fabric, it is entirely up to you.  If you¡¯re as in to recycling as I am, you probably have a stash of old fabric remnants, shirts or skirts that are worn or no longer fit, and all kinds of other assorted materials.  Plenty an old shirt or skirt has been fashioned into a brand-new custom design.  This project is perfect for those saved up materials.

  The first step is to rip the seam from the bottom of the leg.  Use your seam ripper on the outside seam and rip from the hem to the knee.  I suggest working on one leg at a time.  Be sure to measure how far you have ripped the seam so you can make the exact same measurement on the other leg.  Measuring here can be important because what may look the same to the eye won¡¯t necessarily look the same when the panels are properly sewn in.

  Next you will need to take the measurements for your patterned fabric.  For this particular project, the recommended width of the fabric will be the same as the circumference of the leg.  The length (or height ¨C depending on how you look at it) of the fabric should be 1 inch longer than the ripped seam.  If the recommended width creates more of a flare than you¡¯d like, simply adjust the width measurement to your liking.  The fabric¡¯s length will remain the same no matter what the width.  Once you have marked your measurements, fold the fabric in half.  You will now need to cut a triangle from the top of the fold to the bottom edge of the selvage where you have marked the width.

  Now turn the jeans inside out to place and pin your fabric insert.  The top point of your fabric triangle should be lined up with the end of the ripped seam at the knee.  Be sure to allow room for a ?-inch seam.  When the fabric insert is properly covering the opening in the leg, pin it securely.

  With the outside edge of the denim and fabric touching, create a seam.  The denim and fabric should be sewn together so it forms a little ?-inch ridge around the inside edge of the fabric insert.  Be sure to take extra care to reinforce the corner at the ripped knee.

  Next you will need to repeat the entire process with the other leg of your jeans.  When that is completed, turn your newly created flare jeans right side out.  Adding pocket accents that match the flare insert really look nice but are optional.

  To make pocket inserts cut two small pieces of fabric from what you had leftover.  They should be cut into rectangles that are 1 inch wider and 2 inches longer than the exposed pocket opening of your front pockets.  With the printed side of the fabric facing up, fold away from you to create a ?-inch seam.  Hand-stitch this to the bottom edge of the waistband over the pocket.  Now evenly spread some fabric glue on the backside of the fabric.  Press the fabric down over the exposed panel of the pocket.  When positioned correctly, you¡¯ll need to finish the edge running down the seam at the side.  Fold the fabric¡¯s edge in ?-inch.  Hand-stitch the fabric to the outside seam.  Smooth the rest of the fabric down into the pocket.  For the other pocket repeat this process.

  There you have it!  You have just created your first pair of customized flare jeans.  Now that you know how to do it you can make flare jeans to match everything you wear!
