Bass fishing can be one of the most fun and most rewarding pastimes. It is, also, a fairly inexpensive hobby to have. It is a sport that can be enjoyed alone or with friends or family. Of course, you can go to the nearest marine sports store and purchase a big, expensive bass boat with electronic fish finders and multiple live wells. If that is what you want and can afford it, then great!

However, you don’t have to have a lot of expensive gear to catch the perfect bass. All you have to have is a rod and reel, your choice of bait, stringer or bucket, needle nose pliers-in case a fish swallows your hook-and a net. (If you are wading, leave the net at home. It will only get in your way.)

You don’t even have to travel very far to find a place to fish. Of course, a lot of the fishing television shows are broadcast from large lakes all over the country, and there is bass to be found in these lakes. You can even fish for bass in these lakes without a boat. Concentrate your fishing around piers and floating docks. Another great place to fish for bass is in your local creek or river. You can wade down the middle of the creek, casting on either side or straight out in front of you, or you can walk along the bank if the terrain permits. 

You’d be surprised how shallow the water can actually be and still hold that elusive fish just waiting for your bait to hit the water. If you are creek fishing and can see the bottom of the creek, look for slabs of rock that are above or just under the surface of the water. These are great hiding places for bass. Stumps from trees and bushes and fallen branches also make great places to cast for bass. Be careful, however, because if a bass hits your bait, the first thing it will do is try to jump out of the water and spit the bait out of its mouth. 

That’s right. Bass are smarter than a lot of other kinds of fish. They know that it is possible to rid themselves of that hook, and they will certainly try to do just that! The best way to keep that bass on the hook is to try and keep him in the water. Hold the tip of your rod pointed downward at an angle toward the water. Bring him as close to the shore as possible, and then bring him quickly out onto the shore. After you have him on dry land, you can concentrate on getting the hook out of his mouth. If you are in a boat, apply the same principle of keeping him in the water as long as possible. As soon, as you have him close to your net, scoop him out of the water and into the boat.

Let’s move on to choice of bait. This really comes down to personal preference. No matter how many years an angler has fished, if he goes to a new lake, river, or creek, he has to determine which bait to use. That can be overwhelming because the choices are so vast. There are spinner baits, spider jigs, tube heads, rooster tails, buzz baits, and the list goes on and on. 

How do you decide what bait to use in a particular body of water? The best way to make that decision is to talk to local anglers. Take a walk along the river bank and talk to other fishermen. If that isn’t an option, then you can find a vast amount of information from the local bait store. Many times these stores will even have literature with information that targets local bodies of water. You will most certainly run into another fishermen in the store, so don’t be afraid to ask questions about what is the best bait to use, what depth to fish in, and where the best chances of catching a bass are during that particular time of year. You can also attend weigh-ins at bass tournaments, ask questions, and just listen as the anglers discuss what techniques and bait they used. If you get several answers, buy a variety of bait. If one doesn’t work this time, chances are it will work some other time at some other place, and the best thing is you are adding gear to your tackle box! 

Once you have determined the place you want to fish in, and you have decided which bait you want to try first, it is time to focus on getting that first bite. The first bite is really more important than you might think. Bass can go on a feeding frenzy, and all you need is that first fish to attack your bait. 

If you are having trouble attracting that first bite, you may need to execute a few simple changes in the way you are fishing. Don’t necessarily think you need to change baits, especially if you know the bass have been hitting that bait in that area recently. Instead, try changing the way you are reeling the bait in. Reel in using a different speed. Try reeling slow and steady for awhile, and if that isn’t working, then pick up the pace. You might even reel a few feet, stop reeling, then reel some more and stop again as if you are teasing your prey. 

Even with the right gear and plenty of good information, you could still find yourself without any fish on your stringer. If this happens, you may need to pay more attention to your surroundings. Look at the surface of the water. Are there circular ripples that represent some type of fish hitting the water? If not, there may not be an activity below the surface either. Watch the birds in the area. Are they flying low looking for food? If not, maybe they know there are better places to hunt. There is nothing wrong with leaving a so-called “great fishing hole” and hunting for greener pastures. If the fish aren’t biting, what have you got to lose? 

Remember: the more you fish, the more you will learn. In time, potential fishermen may come to you for advice. The best way to learn something is to experience it firsthand. The process of elimination, access to others’ knowledge, and the confidence that you can succeed all go a long way toward creating successful fishing trips.
