How many box lids have you thrown away in your lifetime? Little or big the lids could¡¯ve made fabulous picture frames and you could help recycle what most people consider trash. Picture frames from box lids are cute and can be decorated in a number of different ways.
Laminate any photo and cut it to the box lid size. The picture can be a family photo or a portion of a poster. One look for the picture frame is to sink the laminated photo all the way to the bottom of the lid and then decorate the sides. Another way is to wad up paper toweling or newspaper, lay them in the lid, then laminate the photo and place the edges of it onto the edges of the box lid. The paper towels or newspaper keep the picture from sinking inward over time. Simply put glue on the edges of the box lid and align the picture then set a lightweight book on top to hold it down while the glue dries.
To decorate the type of frame where the picture goes to the bottom of the inside lid use texture paint, fabric or cover completely with tiny shell macaroni. Texture paint works great since it gives the look of plaster to almost anything. Texture paint doesn¡¯t go on smoothly but dries with a rough feel and look. Don¡¯t forget the inside of the box lid sides. Outline the actual picture with yarn, ribbon or cloth strips. There¡¯s no need to paint the back of the box lid which will be up against the wall but you can if you want. Use a cloth picture hanger and adhere it to the top center of the backside.
To decorate the type of picture frame where the photo is mounted on top of the box lid sides use any type of beads, twine, leather or other strips to outline the photo. Now paint or further embellish the box lid sides.
A collage can be made by purchasing a mat for the photos. Mats can be found that allow several pictures to be placed in one frame. Align the photos in the mat and laminate. If you don¡¯t have a laminating machine you can purchase laminating sheets that allow you to simply place the photos between the sheets.
Use a set of box lids to make a wall arrangement with the photos. Shoe box lids are great for this project since you can turn them either vertically or horizontally.
Try using a piece of cloth in place of the photo. Cloth with images like eagles or deer are beautifully done in this manner. You can also use wallpaper, a newspaper clipping, a brochure picture or a cut-out from a magazine.
Choices for decorating any of the frames include cloth, printed adhesive paper, shelf paper, foil, or colored sand.
Connect several small box lids together after mounting the picture and decorating. One way to connect them is to wrap a piece of ribbon around three or four lids, leaving a gap in between each one. Leave a remainder of ribbon hanging off of each top edge to tie a bow by which to hang the set. |
