It seems that today, more and more people who never before had any interest in the game of poker (or gambling in general) suddenly want to know how to play, if for no other reason than to see what all the fuss is about.  The game that everybody is so fanatical about these days is Texas Hold ＆em, but to learn how to play it you first have to learn the rules that apply to pretty much all forms of poker.

The basic goal of the game of poker is to make a five-card hand that is better than any of the other players＊ five-card hands.  Poker is played with a standard deck of 52 cards, which is made up of cards in four different suits (specifically clubs, diamonds, hearts, and spades) which are ordered in ascending order from 2 through 10, Jack, Queen, King, and Ace.  There are different varieties of poker which change how many cards you have to choose from to make your five-card hand, most of which involve you having seven cards but only being able to use five; some games only give you five cards, but allow you to discard certain cards and draw more.  Either way, before you can go about making or calling bets, you need to know what these ※hands§ you＊re looking for are.

The lowest hand isn＊t much of one, and is referred to as ※High Card§.  As the name implies, this hand consists of five unpaired cards that don＊t form any other hand, the highest of which defines the hand.  For example, if you had the Ace, 10, 4 of hearts and the 7 and 2 of clubs in your hand, you would have an Ace-high hand.  The only hand a High Card hand can beat is lower High Card hands, and if two players both have, say, a King-high hand, the second-highest card is used to break the tie, and so on.

The second-lowest hand in poker is one pair.  This hand is made up of two cards that are the same ranking (two Jacks, for instance) and three other unpaired cards.  A pair beats no pair, and if you have two different pairs of cards in your hand, your hand is called two pair.  Two pair beats one pair, and if two players both have two pair, the one whose higher pair is highest wins.  For example, if one player has Aces and Twos and the other player has Kings and Fives, the player with the Aces wins the pot.  If two players both have the same two pair, the fifth card in the hand is used to break the tie.  This card is referred to as a ＆kicker＊.

After two pair comes three of a kind, sometimes called a ＆set＊ or ＆trips＊.  Three of a kind is exactly what it sounds like 每 three cards of the same ranking, and two other unpaired cards.  Three of a kind can beat any two pair or pair, regardless of whether or not the cards in the three of a kind are lower than the pairs.  That is to say, a set of Twos will always beat a pair of Aces.

The next two hands are often where people start to get a little confused.  The next-highest hand after three of a kind is a Straight.  A Straight is made up of five cards that are sequential order.  For instance, hands of 2-3-4-5-6 and 8-9-10-Jack-Queen are both Straights.  The confusion often comes into play surrounding the Ace, however.  In poker, an Ace can count as either a low card or a high card, when it comes to a Straight.  So both A-2-3-4-5 and 10-J-Q-K-A are valid Straights.  However, you can NOT use an Ace as high and low in the same hand.  Therefore, you could not make a Straight with Q-K-A-2-3.  Finally, the winner of a showdown between two Straights is determined by the highest card in the Straight.

This brings us to the Flush, which is made up of five cards that are all the same suit.  If you have five cards that are all diamonds, you have a Flush.  Which specific suit a Flush is has no bearing on how good a hand it is; it only matters that they are the entire same one.  Like a Straight, a Flush is determined by the highest card in it; an Ace-high Flush beats a King-high Flush.  It is important to remember that it has to be five cards of the same suit 每 four diamonds and one club does not make a Flush. 

Only three hands can beat a Flush, and one of them is a Full House.  A Full House is also called a ＆boat＊, and it is made up of three of a kind and a pair.  Three Jacks and two Sevens is a Full House.  In the case of two players with Full Houses, the player with the higher set wins.  The next hand is four of a kind, or ＆quads＊.  Simply enough, having four of a kind is when you have all four of one card 每 such as all four Threes or all four Queens.  A tie among quads is only possible in poker varieties that have community cards, in which case the kicker comes into play to break the tie.

The highest hand in poker is a Straight Flush.  Obviously, this is when the same five cards make both a Straight AND a Flush.  If you had in your hand the Ace, Two, Three, Four and Five of spades, you would have a Straight Flush.  These are of course ranked by the highest card in the Straight Flush, and the absolute highest poker hand (made up of the 10-J-Q-K-A of one suit) gets its own name 每 the rarely seen Royal Flush.

Only a couple other things are needed to know before one can begin playing poker 每 specifically, the rules about betting.  Different games have different betting structures and systems, but the basics are as follows:  in one hand of poker there will usually be at least two rounds of betting, in which players may (if they so choose) make a bet based on the strength of their hand.  The other players have a choice of calling the bet (matching the bet that was made) and staying in the hand, or folding their cards without losing any more money.  Also, they have the option of raising a bet 每 that is, calling the bet and then making a bet of their own, that the original bettor will have to meet to keep playing.  Eventually, after the last round of betting, whichever players are still in the hand must have showdown 每 flip over their cards and see who has the better poker hand.  The way in which a player bets or calls or raises or folds is really what makes up their poker strategy.

This information is only the extreme basics of the game, and does not explain the different varieties of the game, or the strategies needed to have a chance of being a successful poker player.  However, it is enough so that you won＊t be completely bewildered while watching people play the game, or attempting to play it yourself.
