Here, two of the most basic jewelry techniques are explained. A supplies list will accompany each technique explanation.
Making Beaded Links:
To make beaded bracelet or necklace links, you will need:
¡¤ A length of 18 or 20-gauge wire, approximately 4 inches needed per link
¡¤ At least one bead for each link you plan to make
¡¤ Needle-nose pliers
¡¤ Round-nose pliers
¡¤ Wire cutters
To begin, hold the wire in your needle-nose pliers, approximately one inch from the end. Bend the wire with your thumb or finger until the one-inch section is bent at a 90-degree angle away from the rest of the wire.
Now, place one of the pincers of the round-nose pliers against the bend you just made. Keeping the bulk of the wire in place, bend the one-inch section around the round-nose pliers pincer, effectively making a circle in the wire. Hold the circle with the pliers, by placing the pincer inside the circle you just made. Now continue making the circle, bringing the smaller section of wire again to a 90-degree angle from the rest of the wire.
At this point the wire should be a long section, with a circle at the top, and a small section of leftover wire pointing off to one side.
Hold the circle you just made in the needle-nose pliers, and use your fingers to wrap the small leftover wire section around the long piece of wire. Wrap this tightly against the base of the circle you just made. This should form a tight spiral under the circle. This completes one end of the beaded bracelet/necklace link.
Next, thread the bead that you wish to use onto the wire. Bring the bead to rest in a position that allows it to press against the finished link end.
Grasp the unfinished wire with the needle-nose pliers, as close to the bead as you can. Again, bend the wire with your thumb or finger to form another 90-degree angle. Finish this end of the beaded link in the same manner as you made the first end.
Your beaded link is complete!
Making Jump Rings:
Once you have made several beaded bracelet or necklace links, you will need a way to connect them all to form one piece of jewelry. This can be accomplished by using jump rings. While you can buy jump rings, it¡¯s just as easy to make your own.
You will need:
¡¤ Small bamboo dowel
¡¤ Approximately 6 inches of 18 or 20-gauge wire
¡¤ Wire cutters and needle-nose pliers
Using one thumb, hold the wire against the dowel tightly. Wrap the rest of the wire around the dowel tightly, making sure to press the wire spirals against each other. Uniformity is key in this process. Once all of the wire is wrapped, slide the coiled wire off of the dowel.
Cut the spirals apart with the wire-cutters; you should be left with many small wire circles, or jump rings.
To connect two links together, simply open a jump ring slightly, thread it through the closed loop ends of two or more links, and then carefully close the jump ring. |
