Many people like mag wheels on their bikes because they look cool. The truth is, however, mags have other qualities that make them desirable.
Spoked wheels are light and tough, but need frequent adjusting to keep them straight, or true. This is especially the case if the bike has disc brakes. Truing is accomplished with a spoke wrench, and is done by tightening and loosening spoke ends one at a time. It can become a tedious task.
On the other hand, mag wheels, which look similar to mag auto wheels, can be ridden hard without losing their alignment. This makes them good for trick riding, and they are sometimes seen on freestyle and BMX bikes. These bikes take a pounding as their riders hop curbs, pop wheelies, and race on rugged terrain. If a stunt bike does not have durable mag wheels, it needs wheels with 32 to 48 spokes to handle the stress.
By the way, modern BMX bikes are made for heavy use, and generally do not need a great deal of customizing to be adequate for the average rider. Custom parts are fun to shop for, however, and do dress up a plain bike. When buying wheels, however, consider that racing and stunt riding are hard on wheels. You might want to think twice before spending a lot of money on wheels for a young rider.
Particularly on bikes for youth, mags are made of plastics, resins, and carbon fibers. These are very durable, and, contrary to popular opinion, are not likely to crack with use.
Good quality mag wheels are also available for adult mountain bikes. Two companies that make these wheels are Aerospoke and Synergy. These wheels are tough enough to handle mountain topography, and stay true without constant repairs. Made of magnesium and aluminum alloy, they are relatively maintenance free. Some are designed to be used with tubeless tires and disc brakes. They are reported to reduce vibrations that are felt with other wheels. They are aerodynamically designed to reduce drag from the wind, and they are easier to clean than spoked wheels.
For a bike with hand brakes, aluminum alloy wheels provide another plus. In wet weather, they will stop ten times faster than steel rims. Aluminum alloy is also lighter than steel, which makes riding easier in any weather. To determine if rims are made of steel, see if a magnet will stick to them. If so, they are made of steel and should probably be avoided, except on bikes with coaster brakes.
When using a bike, it is always important to lock it up in order to prevent theft. With mags, the chain can be inserted through the wheels as well as the frame. Thus the wheels are protected from theft as well. This is especially important to remember if you have quick release wheels. (These wheels have a lever at the hub that can be lifted to remove the wheel, making a wrench unnecessary.) Inserting a chain through spokes can easily throw the wheel out of alignment as well as leave you with bloody knuckles.
Better quality mag wheels will have much better hubs than cheaper wheels. The best hubs are machined and made from one piece of metal. Cheaper wheels have pressed fit hubs. Good hubs are much more durable, protecting the bearings and keeping the axles moving smoothly. Be sure to keep the hub, bearings, and axles well greased.
Good mags may be made with aluminum around the rim and composite material for the rest of the wheel. If so, be sure to use brake pads designed for aluminum rims and make sure they are adjusted to fit against only the aluminum part. Otherwise, using the brakes may damage the wheels. These wheels will be heavier than those made of magnesium and aluminum alloy throughout.
To protect the rims, check the air pressure in the tires weekly. Tires that are under inflated will make the bike hard to ride and will increase the chance of a flat tire or damage to the wheel. When a bicycle is new, check the nuts and bolts within the first few weeks to make sure they are tight. Never ride on a flat tire. This can ruin a wheel. In addition, if you have quick release wheels, be sure they fit tightly. If they are loose, they can come off while riding. Not only is this dangerous, it is very likely the wheels will be damaged if they come off unexpectedly.
Although often overlooked, the wheels on a bike are one of the most critical components to consider when buying a new bike or customizing a used one. It pays to choose them well and take care of them. |
