Macaroni noodle necklaces make great gifts for children to give to their teachers, parents, and relatives. For the price of a box of macaroni noodles, some string, paint, paint brushes, and some beads, you can make several necklaces and bracelets!
Make sure you have a clean work area and a place to let painted objects dry. To start this project, set out different colors of paint and paint brushes. Have the kids paint the pieces of macaroni noodle with the different colors. It is important to not fill the holes in the macaroni noodles with paint! If this happens, the macaroni noodles will not fit onto the string and therefore will be unusable for the necklaces. Have each child paint as many as he or she will need for the desired necklace length.
When each child has a good amount of macaroni noodles, set these noodles aside to dry. Placing the drying noodles on a sheet of wax paper would be helpful, because the paint will not stick as much to the wax paper as it would to regular paper. While the macaroni noodles are drying, have each child pick out the beads that he or she would like to have on their necklace in addition to the macaroni noodles.
When the noodles are completely dry, bring them back to the work area. Cut a piece of string for each child. You should add a few inches to the length of the string so that you can tie it once the necklace is complete. First, tie one piece of macaroni or a bead to the end of the string. This will prevent all the macaroni and beads from falling off the end of the string. Next, start stringing your macaroni noodles and beads. You can do this randomly for a unique necklace, or you could choose a pattern to follow. This pattern can be a color pattern or a noodle and beads pattern. When you have filled up most of the string, attach another noodle or bead to the other end of the necklace by tying a knot. Once again, this will prevent the macaroni noodles and beads from falling off the necklace. Now you can tie the macaroni around your neck and wear it! If you want to be able to easily put on and take off the necklace without untying many knots (children can have a lot of trouble untying knots!) just make the necklace long enough to slip over the head.
There are variations of this necklace. You can use different types of pasta noodles in place of macaroni. Just make sure that the noodles have holes so that they can be strung together for the necklace! Also, you can add ribbons to the necklace. These will hang down from the necklace in several different places. To do this, cut small strips of ribbon and tie them through the macaroni noodles just like you did with the first noodle on the end of the necklace. Try adding beads to the ends of these ribbons!
