Decorating the Christmas tree does not have to cost a fortune.  In fact, you can make ornaments from items that you find or collect during the year.  Here are five low-cost ideas you can use to decorate your Christmas tree.

1. Ornaments from nature:  Take a field trip to the park or search your yard for items you can use to decorate your tree. You will find pinecones and various nuts depending on were you live.  If you live on the beach, you may even find seashells.  You will need to dry out your found items in the oven at a low temperature to eliminate any bugs that may be living in them.  You can then spray paint the nuts and other finds with gold spray paint or white snow paint to make them look more festive.  Then all you need to do is hang them from ribbons and put them on your tree.

2. Ornaments from your pantry:  Items found in your pantry make great Christmas ornaments.  Walnuts can be painted gold and hung from ribbon.  You can also thread pasta noodles on a string or ribbon to make garland and look great, either painted or in their original state.  For a shabby chic look, create ornaments using dried beans.  Purchase plain Styrofoam balls, cover them in glue and roll them in white navy beans or dried green peas.  Next, glue a ribbon in a contrasting color around the ornament and hang it on the tree.

3. Ornaments you can eat.  You can hang inexpensive candy canes on your tree very easily. You can also add lollipops, gingerbread cookies and other treats like popcorn strung on a ribbon.  You can also string fresh cranberries on the tree if you wish.  With the addition of ribbons, bows, or hooks you can decorate the tree with any candy you desire such as Starlight Mints (which are the right colors for Christmas), Tootsie Rolls, Life Savers or anything your sweet tooth desires.

4. Gift box ornaments:  These ornaments can be made inexpensively if you collect boxes all year long.  Save jewelry boxes, baking soda boxes, boxes from your food coloring and vanilla, small candy boxes, and the like.  If you find you still do not have enough boxes, you can purchase packs of tiny boxes at your local hobby store.  For the smallest boxes, you can paint them in colors for the holiday season.  For slightly bigger boxes, you can wrap them with brightly colored holiday paper.  Add ribbon to all of your boxes and hang them on the tree.

5. Recycled ornaments:  You can recycle the lids from your frozen juice containers to make wonderful Christmas ornaments. If you save them all year long, you could end up with over 100 ornaments. First, spray paint all of your lids in gold, white, or silver.  Then cut out pictures from recycled Christmas cards and using a hot glue gun, add the pictures to your lids.  Make a hole in your lids using a nail and hang then from your tree on thin strands of ribbon.
