Traditional Native American crafts often feature bands of loom woven beading.  These hand crafted geometric designs usually consist of several bright primary colors.  With today¡¯s bead looms, they are fun and easy to make.  These looms hold threads tight and an equal distance from each other, so that beads can be woven into the threads.

To create these beaded bands, a beading loom is needed.  These are available in different widths, but 2 to 3 inches is common.  These looms range in price from $10 to $20.

Seed beads come in a range of sizes from 15/0, which is very tiny, to 6/0, which is the largest seed bead.  Loom weaving is typically done with 11/0-sized beads, (called  ¡°eleven-ought.¡±)  The number refers to how many beads side by side fit into an inch.  Ten-ought (10/0) beads are a little larger, and might be less problematic for beginners to use.  The beads can be purchased on strings, which makes them easier to use, or they can be purchased loose.  They are available in a wide variety of colors.

The beading crafter will also need a needle.  A number 9 embroidery needle or a number 10 between will work.  For thread, common sewing thread in a neutral is usually used.  It will be almost invisible, but the color chosen should harmonize with the colors of the beads you choose, or use a neutral color.

The loom will first need to be dressed with warp threads.  The number of warp threads you will need will be equal to the number of beads in the width of the design you wish to make, plus one.  An uneven number of beads in the width will allow you to have a design that has points which are symmetrical in the middle of the band.

Graph out the design you wish to make.  Special beading graph paper is available, but any graph paper will work.  Make a traditional geometric pattern, or experiment with other designs.  Patterns for bead designs are widely available.

Warp the loom according to the directions that come with the loom. Keep the threads uniformly taut, but not too tight.  It will probably have a bar on which extra warp can be rolled, and another bar on which completed beading can be rolled.  In this way, longer bands of beading can be made.

To begin the beading, thread the needle with a piece of thread approximately 30 inches long.  Tie it onto the left hand warp thread.  (Reverse if you are left-handed.)  Slip the first row of beads onto the thread in the correct order for your pattern.  Slide them all the way down the thread to the knot on the warp thread.  Bring the thread and beads under the warp threads, and arrange them so that a bead lies between each two warp threads.  To attach the beads, bring the needle through the beads, keeping the needle above the warp threads.  Pull the thread taut and arrange the beads into a straight row with your fingers if necessary.

Each row will consist of a thread through the beads, which is under the warp threads, and another thread through the beads, which is above the warp threads.  Continue this method, following the pattern for bead placement.  Push each new row up snug against the row before, and pull the thread taut.

Some of the beads may not work well.  If a particular bead is too large or small it will make your beadwork irregular.  Also, some of them may not fit easily over the needle.  Any beads with these problems are ¡°culls¡± and should be thrown away.

Tie the thread to the last warp thread after your last row.  To finish off the beaded band, first tape the warp threads together.  Then glue them to a backing, such as a small piece of leather.  Use thick glue that won¡¯t seep between the beads.

If you like, you can tie the warp threads in twos (so as to hold the beads in place) and then thread more beads onto the threads in order to make a beaded fringe.

The finished strip can be used as a hatband, headband, or to decorate clothing.  Then again, perhaps it can become jewelry, as in a bracelet or choker necklace.  However you choose to use your beaded bands, they will be an attractive reminder of the heritage of our American native people.
