As a Novice Archer, learning the ins and outs of your new bow should be the first thing on your mind. Everyone is familiar with the workings of a bow and arrow, but how does one sight in this new device we call the sight. How do you acquire your target? How do you line it up? How do you release the arrow? And finally, what do you do after all that? 

For a starting point, I will assume that you have purchased a compound bow of some sort and that you have either bought sights for it or it came with them. I will also assume that you had your draw length measured and that you are using the proper length arrow, with the proper size shaft and target tips. You have a release and understand how to attach it to your bow properly and have the proper protective equipment for your body to avoid a nasty bowstring burn on your support arm. If you don¡¯t have a clue what I¡¯m talking about at this point, I recommend that you stop by your local hunting store or ask a friend that knows a thing or two about shooting before you go any further. NEVER dry fire your bow! This means do not pull back the bowstring and let it go without an arrow if place. It can seriously injure your bow and you. 

So now that your bow is all set up and you have everything that you will need to start shooting, including a safe area and a target. I recommend getting a long cloth tape and measure distance off from about 5 yards back to 20 yards. Mark the ground with a stake of some kind that you will be able to find when you want to shoot and place one at every 5 yard increment. This way you will have something to gauge your range with. Once you have done this, we can now start sighting in your bow.

For the most part, bow sites will all operate on the same principle. You should see a set of multi colored pegs affixed to the side of your bow just above where your arrow rest is. They are movable in an up down, left right motion and will be staggered as your distance increases. I recommend moving all of your pegs out of the way except for one and start with this peg about ?¡± down from it¡¯s top position and centered on the left/right axis. Step up to your 5-yard mark, knock your arrow (load your arrow), attach your release and assume your ready position facing the target. Once you pull back the bowstring, there should be a small round device that you can look through. This is your peep sight. Pull your bowstring back and place it on the corner of your cheek close to where the edge of your mouth is. You should be able to look through the peep site now and see the peg on your forward site. Ensure that it is your top peg and place it on the center of your target. Let out your breath and when you feel that natural pause¡­squeeze the trigger on your release. Hold your bow in that position until you see the arrow hit the target. (Hopefully you did hit the target.) From there you can adjust your arrow¡¯s strike on the target and begin sighting in. Make any left right adjustments and then your up down moves if need be. At this range you should be able to hit a bulls eye with little difficulty after a few shots. 

When looking at your site, use the pumpkin on the post method to line up your site on the target. Simply put, Imagine a fence post in a field¡­now imagine a pumpkin sitting on that post. The pumpkin is your site post and if you cover the bulls eye of the target with the pumpkin, or sight post, you should be able to sight your bow in nicely. 

You should have about 4 sight pegs on your bow to sight in. I usually go 10-15 on the first peg, 20 to 25 on the second, 30 to 35 on the third and 40 on the last peg. It may take you a while to get up to shooting that far at first. Don¡¯t rush yourself, it¡¯s not safe and it will only end up costing your money due to lost arrows. Take your time and get confident at close ranges first. Then make your move. The only way to get better is to shoot, so shoot as often as possible.
