If you are a homeowner or have occasional access to a nice-sized yard, you may want to invest in a few lawn games that everyone can enjoy when the weather is warm and dry. Being outdoors and moving around in the sunlight helps to boost the body's production of serotonin, a mood elevator and health enhancement that can make you feel good. Just be careful to avoid being in the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when the rays are hottest. Always wear sunscreen and protect exposed skin by wearing covers and a hat to prevent sun damage that can produce signs of aging and even lead to skin cancer. 

Depending on the ages of those who will be playing the games, there are many options to choose from. Keep in mind that older persons might prefer a more leisurely pace while the younger set could expect more frequent action.

1. Croquette. This is a nice, old-fashioned lawn game enjoyed previously by aristocrats and now available to people of every class and station in life. Metal or plastic loops are poked into the ground to form short arches of perhaps six inches in height and width. These are set at varied intervals about the yard to form a course for playing the ball through, like golf. Using a wooden mallet with a long handle, players take turns tapping a hard ball through each of the loops in as few strokes as possible. Boxed sets sell anywhere from about $20 and up, though you can probably get them more cheaply on EBay or another used item location.

2. Volleyball. This game can be played indoors or outside for league competition or simple family fun. A large nylon net is secured by posts in the ground. Players use their hands to toss a basketball size ball back and forth over the net trying to make it fall where players can't get it and thus winning a point. The goal is to keep it aloft. After a set time, the team with the most points wins. You can buy regulation-style equipment that can cost $20 or more, or you can make your own "net" by draping a blanket over the clothesline. 

3. Another variation of this game that uses a net is badminton. Players use racquets to bat a lightweight ball or birdie back and forth across the net, much like the game of tennis. When the other side misses it and the birdie lands on the ground, the batter's team wins a point. The racquets and birdie, along with a simple net, typically cost anywhere from $10 and up. 

4. Bocce ball. This Italian lawn game is similar to the well-known recreation of bowling or table pool. Wooden balls are rolled or tossed at a cluster of other balls to scatter them and rack up points. There are several variations to this activity, depending on the players' interest and skill level. New sets can cost up to $100 or more. 

5. Water games. Balloon toss, slip-and-slide, or just plain squirting fun using a garden hose can cool off overheated kids on a humid day. Just turn on the water and let them go for an hour or so, taking care to see that they wear sunscreen and renew it every 30 minutes since the water will wash it off. Of course, an above-ground or in-ground pool is nice, too, if you have the yard room and don't mind the maintenance. Prices can start at $5 for a plastic or vinyl kiddy pool to thousands of dollars for the Olympic-size professional variety. 

You can always find other things to do in the yard as well. For example, lay out a blanket at dusk and watch the stars twinkle into view, one by one, as night comes on. Or get up early and take a stroll around the lawn as the sun comes up, smelling the fresh air or flowery scents that might come your way. Lawn tea parties are fun, and little ones can play in large vinyl playhouses, climb into wooden tree houses, or clamber on a swing set or jungle gym. Getting out into the fresh air and sunshine is the main goal, with the games an added attraction.

As you can see, it doesn't take a ton of money to have outdoor fun in your yard. Watch for markdowns or second-hand sales and stock up on toys and games that will make your yard the life of any party.
