Koi ponds are a unique way to decorate any yard.  They are like having a fish tank on a much larger scale.  The purpose of such a pond is not only for the enjoyment of the owner, but also for the keeping of healthy koi fish (which are a larger version of the goldfish).  Here are some tips for building your own koi pond in your very own yard.

Many garden stores, such as Steins, will carry plastic garden pond liners.  These liners come in a variety of shapes and sizes to fit all needs.  Some people like to have a small pond and others prefer to have a larger pond which includes multiple levels.  The first step is to buy one of these liners.  The best size for a koi pond is at least 500 gallons and at least 24 inches deep.  

Once you have purchased the liner, you must decide where in your yard it will go.  After this is determined, you must dig a hole the size of the liner in which to place the liner.  The hole you dig will likely be a little to big, but that is ok.  Once the liner is placed where you would like it to be, you just need to fill in dirt wherever the liner is not touching the edge.  It is best to leave part of it open until the drainage system is in place.  It is very important for a koi pond to be well filtered.

A biological filter is the best type of filter to use for these types of ponds.  Biological filters use natural micro-organisms to naturally filter the fish waste into clean, clear water.  A swimming pool filter will not work for koi ponds.  The chemicals will kill the ammonia needed in the water.  The filter will require a pump to get the water moving through the filtration system.  

Once the filtration system is installed, you can finish filling in the ground around the liner.  You can then decorate the outsides of the pond with flat flagstones or other decorative stones.  Lay these end to end around the outside edges of the pond for a decorative, finished look.  If you so desire, you can also cement these in place so you do not have to worry about them being moved.  

Once the pond is safely in place, it can be filled with water.  The water should be dechlorinated with a special dechlorinator available at fish stores.  Chlorine is dangerous to the fish.  After water is added, plants can be added.  Water lilies are a popular outdoor pond plant that thrives well in koi ponds.  Other plants well known to show up in koi ponds are water hyacinths, water lettuce, and frog bites.  Most of these plants are available at specialty fish stores where you may also purchase koi.  A waterfall or fountain is recommended to keep the water aerated.   

Some people also wish to landscape around their koi pond.  In addition to the decorative stones, they add small shrubs or flowers around the pond.  These will provide a unique look to your pond keeping it different from everyone else¡¯s ponds.  

When everything is done with the pond, it is time to add fish.  It is recommended to start with just a few cheap feeder fish to make sure that the pond is safe for fish.  This will allow the filtration system to prove itself to you.  If the feeder fish survive for a few days, it is considered safe to go ahead and purchase the more expensive koi.  

Koi come in a wide variety of colors and sizes.  They are very similar in look to fancy goldfish, but are much larger in size.  They come in a wide variety of colors and color combinations, anywhere from white to orange to black.  Once you have chosen your koi, it is time to take them home and introduce them to their new pond home.

Taking care of the koi does not have to be a difficult task.  They should be fed every day, but that is about all you need to worry about.  Like any other tank, fish should be watched for signs of illness or distress to keep from the entire pond being infected.  If you are living in a climate with cold winters where the pond would likely freeze through, it is recommended to move the koi to an indoor pond or tank of some sort for the winter months to keep them safe.
