Green and/or red poster board

Red and green round peppermint candies

Preparation:

1) Let the child choose their favorite photo of themselves for framing.  If this is going to be made into a Christmas decoration, choose a small picture.  Be sure that the photo is a replica of existing photos so that the original can still be used around the house or stored in the family photo album.  

2) You will be cutting a backing for the picture out of the poster board.  The backing can be cut into many different shapes, such as squares, circles, or stars.  If multiple children will be participating in this craft, some of who are young, it is a good idea to find patterns so that the shapes are somewhat uniform.  When deciding on a pattern, keep the size of the photo in mind.  You want about ? -1 inch of backing to show all around the picture.  

3) Gather up old newspapers to spread out over the intended workstation.  Glitter is messy!

Instructions:

1) Either free-handing or using the pattern, have the children cut out the shape they want their ornament to be from the poster board using the child-safe scissors.  Adult assistance with cutting may be necessary for very young children.  

2) Give each child some unwrapped peppermints and glitter.  Using the tacky glue the children can stick peppermints as little decorations on the front side of the poster board.  Be sure the children know to leave room in the middle for their picture.  Then, using the rubber cement glue, have the children spread a thin layer of clear glue over the rest of the edges of the poster board, being careful not to cover the middle where their photo will go.  Sprinkle glitter over the glue and set the projects aside to let them dry.  

3) When the glue has dried, spray the whole ornament, an adult can spray the whole ornament with acrylic spray.  A child may do this, under adult supervision.  Allow the coating to dry and repeat two more time.  The acrylic keeps the peppermints from looking to tempting to ants and other pests.  

4) When  all of the coats of acrylic have dried, the child can glue their picture to the center of the poster board shape and let it dry.  

5) Then, using the hole punch, make a hole at the top and center of the ornament.  

6) String the holiday colored yarn through the top of the ornament and tie it in a pretty bow.  The children can cut off the excess yarn, or they can leave some hanging down for extra decoration, whichever they prefer.  

Things to consider:

The more peppermints a child uses, the heavier it will make the ornament, which means, the more difficult it will be to hang on a tree.  Encourage extra glitter use if the child wants more decoration.   

Other shades of poster board, such as yellow or silver, can also make beautiful Christmas ornaments, so feel free to branch out from the traditional red and green.  

Ribbon, raffia, or clear fishing line also make fine substitutes for the yarn.  

Rubber cement glue can be substituted for other types of glue, as long as the glue will dry clear.  It is also preferable that the glue be easily spread-able.
