There are many aspects to coaching the sport of baseball. Good infield strategy can make or break a ballgame. Baseball isn¡¯t just about hitting the ball and scoring. A good defense can be the difference between winning and losing a game. Defense is actually more important than hitting. Winning teams need to know how to keep the other teams from scoring runs. 

The first thing that coaches want their players to learn is to be on their toes or the balls of their feet so that they can move easily and quickly in any direction. Standing flat footed inhibits movement and, therefore, impedes accuracy in stopping the ball. 

When fielding a ground ball, the fielder should have his feet about shoulder width apart and knees bent so that his butt is low to the ground. This encourages good balance. The fielder¡¯s glove should be in out in front of his body so that it forms an equilateral triangle with his feet. (An equilateral triangle is defined as three equal sides.) Keeping this in mind, the fielder should have his feet an equal distance apart in relation to the position of his glove so that a triangle is formed with the glove being positioned at the top. 

As a player fields the ball, he needs to position himself in front of the ball, and after fielding it, he needs to get in a throwing position as quickly as possible by placing the ball up near his ear. As he is fielding the ball and getting into throwing position, he needs to make sure that his momentum is carrying him in the direction that he is going to throw the ball.

Each infield position has a specific role. The role of the first baseman is primarily to catch the ball from the other infielders on ground balls. It is important that the first baseman knows the correct positioning of his feet in relation to the first base bag. When receiving a throw from another fielder, he should start with both feet on the bag. A right handed first baseman should keep his right foot on the bag and step to the ball with his left foot, making sure that he knows the direction of the ball so he doesn¡¯t step too quickly or in the wrong direction. 

The role of the second baseman and short stop is primarily to field ground balls and throw the balls to the first baseman. He is also responsible for turning double plays at second base. When turning a double play, the second baseman would receive throws from the short stop and third baseman. As he is receiving the throw at second base, he should chop his feet at the bag in order to be ready to move in any direction in case of a bad throw. As he receives the throw, he should step on the bag with his left foot, if possible, and deliver a throw to first as quickly as he can. At the same time, he needs to be prepared for a sliding runner. 

When the shortstop turns a double play, he will be receiving throws from the first baseman, second baseman, and/or pitcher. He will then position himself behind the bag, chop his feet, and be ready to move in any direction in case of a bad throw. He should deliver his throw in the same manner as the second baseman. 

The role of the third baseman is to field ground balls and bunts. The third base is known as the ¡°hot corner¡± because the ball can reach the base very quickly at times. The third baseman needs to be able to react quickly in order to field a hard hit ball or to charge a bunt or slow rolling ball. Sometimes when fielding a bunt or slow rolling ball, the third baseman may have to use a bare hand to catch that ball in order to throw it quickly. 

Remember, good techniques and fundamentals are very important if a player wants to be successful as an infielder. Each position is dependent upon the other infielders¡¯ ability to execute the ball in the correct manner.
