Teaching children about texture is very important in the world of art.  Use this craft to expose children to possibilities in their artwork that they may have never seen before.  The main premise of this project is building a landscape.  This project works best with younger children because some of the items they will be using will be new to them.  To start, each child should have one sheet of construction paper.  Tell the children that they will be making a landscape with clouds, water, grass, and any other items they can fit onto one sheet of construction paper.

Start by working on the sky.  Each child should color the sky with markers, paint, or crayons.  Let each child decide whether he or she wants a blue sky, a yellow sky, or any other randomly colored sky.  When each child has finished coloring his or her own sky, start passing out cotton balls.  Tell the children that these cotton balls will be used to make the clouds and that they can pull the cotton balls apart to make any shape they want to.  Ask the children what they imagine clouds would feel like.  When each child has glued down his or her clouds, move on to the next element.

Next, tell the children that they will be working on water.  Pass out strips of aluminum foil and have the children make their water from the aluminum foil.  Ask for suggestions from the children about what other materials could be used for water.  Remind the children that markers look very watery when used on aluminum foil, so they might want to try to color the aluminum foil with markers.

Next, have the children make a field of grass.  You can pass out Easter grass or have children come up with their own ideas.  Do not be surprised if many children want to use real grass!  If this is a possibility, let the children do so!  The children may find other items to include while they are outside picking grass.  Some examples include finding a feather and using it to make a bird in the landscape, using a twig as the trunk of a tree, and using a dandelion to represent the sun.  You will be surprised at how creative the kids can be!

Try to come up with other elements for a landscape.  What could the children use to make a wheat field?  Maybe some kids would like to make a landscape of a volcano; what could they use for a lava flow?  Offer your own opinions and listen to those of the children.

This project also works well with a large group of children who are making a mural.  Each child can bring in different items to represent different elements of a landscape.  In this end, all of the items are pieced together to make a quilt-like mural.  Depending on the size of the class, you may be able to make a wall-length mural.  Make sure that you tell the children that they may only bring in appropriate, safe items.  Enjoy this project!
