Kids love puzzles, and this project provides a great opportunity for children to make their own puzzles. The materials needed for this project are inexpensive and only a few are needed, so if you are a parent or school system on a tight budget, this is a wonderful craft. In order to make this craft, you will need Popsicle sticks, masking tape, and markers.
Give each child who will be making the project approximately ten Popsicle sticks. You can purchase bags of these wooden sticks at most local craft stores for relatively inexpensive prices. These sticks must be arranged in a specific manner in order for the puzzle to work correctly. Heave each student arrange the sticks lengthwise next to each other, similar to how a raft would be designed. The sticks should not overlap or go in opposite directions. When each child has a raft like shape, take a piece of masking tape and spread it across the row of Popsicle sticks. Then apply another strip of masking tape along the row of sticks so that they all stick together.
Flip over the row of Popsicle sticks. This is the creative part! Have each child use markers to create a puzzle scene. The ideas for puzzles are endless. They can create landscapes, pictures of animals, abstract designs, or even secret letters to their friends! Make sure that the designs stretch across the entire row of Popsicle sticks: if the design is draw stick by stick, the puzzle may be impossible to figure out! Chances are, if this happens, the child will be very disappointed.
Check to make sure each child¡¯s puzzle is a feasible puzzle. When each masterpiece has been completed, flip the row of Popsicle sticks back over and remove the two strips of masking tape that were holding the sticks together. Jumble the sticks and have each child swap their puzzle with a friend. See if the friend can put the puzzle back together again!
These puzzles are great to use for kids who enjoy being secretive. Secret letters tend to be popular in these puzzles. Some children even like to make this project, include a letter, and then send it off to a distant relative!
Another idea that can be useful for children who are not comfortable with their own artistic talents involves taking a page out of a magazine and using it for the base of the puzzle. The majority of the details of the puzzle are the same: the sticks are arranged in a row and then taped together. Then, on the other side of the sticks, a page from a magazine is glued to the sticks. The glue is allowed to dry and then the tape is removed from the sticks. The sticks are then cut from the magazine pictures so that there is no excess magazine paper hanging from the sticks. The sticks are then jumbled and put together again like a puzzle. These make great gifts, and can even be permanently glued together to hang on a wall! |
