Do you remember playing with a ball and cup toy when you were little? Depending on your coordination, getting the ball to land in the cup that it was attached to could take seconds or hours! This toy is timeless! Despite how old this craft may be, kids today still love to try to catch the ball in the cup. Fortunately, this craft is simple to make and inexpensive as well. Entertain your children for an hour with this craft, and then watch them entertain themselves for hours after while playing with their new toy! In order to make this craft, you will need:
-Tin foil
-String
-Small paper cups
-Paint
-One sharp pencil
-Assorted decorations
-Thin wooden dowels
-Masking tape
-Paint
-Paintbrushes
Step One: Using the tip of the sharpened pencil, punch a hole into the base of the paper cup and continue to widen the hole until it is wide enough to fit the wooden dowel. Insert the wooden dowel and tape it into place using the masking tape. When you are sure that it is completely secure in the end of the paper cup, move on to the next step.
Step Two: Let your children paint each of their cups with the paintbrushes and paint. If you want to include sequins or glitter on the cups, apply these before the paint dries. Then let the paint dry completely before moving onto the next step.
Step Three: Tear off a sheet of tin foil (make sure an adult does this, as the sharp edges of the tin foil container are a safety hazard for kids). Then cut a short bit of string, no longer than a foot. Place the end of this string in the center of the sheet of tin foil. Wrap the sheet of tin foil into a ball so that the end of the string is stuck firmly inside of the ball. Squeeze the ball tight to make it stick together. Make sure that the ball you make is not wider than the opening in your paper cup.
Step Four: Attach the other end of the ball and string to the bottom of the inside of the paper cup. You can attach it with a few pieces of masking tape.
Step Five: Let your children paint the tin foil ball and string if they wish. Let the paint dry completely and enjoy the new toy!
Tips:
-Make sure that all pieces of this toy are firmly secured by using masking tape. You can always paint over the tape later if it detracts from the look of the toy. Children get a little crazy with this toy, so it is important to ensure their safety. You do not want an extra pieces flying off of the toy when the children swing it around.
-If you have many children, try having a ball in cup competition. Kids love to see who can try to get their ball in the cup first! This is a great craft to do in an after-school program as both a craft and an activity or game! |
