There are many reasons to install custom rims on your bicycle. You might have had a mishap on your bike and, instead of ordering original equipment, chosen to upgrade to a lighter wheel or you might simply want to improve your bike at a relatively modest cost. This article will go through the steps of installing custom bicycle rims.
Front rim (removal)
Step 1: Hang your bike upside down 每 on a tree limb, for example 每 or lay it on its handlebars.
Step 2: Your bike will either have a quick-release mechanism or a threaded bolt and a nut. Turn nut counter clockwise to loosen mechanism or nut.
Step 3: Pull wheel out of forks. If your wheel catches on the brakes, undo the cable out of its slot to enable the caliper to open all the way.
Rear rim (removal)
Step 1: Hang your bike upside down 每 on a tree limb, for example 每 or lay it on its handlebars.
Step 2: Put your bike in its highest gear 每 the smallest gear on the freewheel.
Step 3: Your bike will either have a quick-release mechanism or a threaded bolt and a nut. Turn nut counter clockwise to loosen mechanism or nut.
Step 4: Pull wheel out of guides in the frame. If your wheel catches on the brakes, undo the cable out of its slot to enable calipers to open all the way.
Step 5: Take hold of the derailleur with your right hand and dislodge the chain from the rear sprocket while turning the rim with your left hand and pushing the unit forward. If your wheel catches on the brakes, undo the cable out of its slot to enable the caliper to open all the way.
Remove the tires and tubes from the old rims using tire irons if you plan on running the same rubber on your new rims. To do this, deflate the tires all the way, break the bead with your fingertips, lift a stretched portion of the tire from the rim, then place an iron under the rubber. Pry the iron around the rim to break the bead completely, then use a second tire iron to peel back the tire from the rim. Never use a screwdriver or knife to remove tires from rims.
The tube should be slack enough to remove from the rim once the tire has been taken off.
Replace or reuse your old tubes and tires on your custom rims. To do this, deflate your tubes three quarters of the way, locate the air valve hole in the rim and thread your tube*s valve through it. Then work your tires over the tube back in both directions from the valve to get the first bead on the rim. Next, use your thumb to bead the second tire lip on the rim. The last section of tire will be very difficult to bead, and the use of bead lube or other lubricant may help in fully beading the tire.
Before inflating the tube be sure to feel around the tire to ensure you do not have a knot or twist. Be sure that the tube isn*t pinched between the tire and the rim, as this will likely damage it. Inflate the tire slowly and inspect it for bulges that may indicate poor beading, a pinched tube or some other problem.
Front rim (replacement)
Step 1: Make sure the quick-release mechanism or threaded bolt and nut are loose, slide the wheel onto the forks and tighten the release or nut half way.
Step 2: Center the rim to the forks and brakes and tighten the release and nut.
Step 3: Reattach your brake and test it before riding your bicycle.
Rear rim (replacement)
Step 1: Make sure the quick-release mechanism or threaded bolt and nut are loose.
Step 2: Take hold of the derailleur with your right hand, pulling it to create as much slack in your chain as possible, and engage the chain over the smallest rear sprocket.
Step 3: Position the wheel up and back into the guides in the frame.
Step 4: Visually inspect the wheel to be sure it is centered on the bike and is not caught up on the brake.
Step 5: Reattach your brake and test it before riding your bicycle.
Test out that you have reassembled all parts correctly when everything is back together. Pay particular attention to the brakes and position of the wheels on the bike. If you hear an unusual noise at a regular interval, check to be sure your tires are mounted correctly. If your bike steers funny, be sure to check the wheel alignment on both ends of your bike. Shift through your gears to be sure your rear derailleur doesn*t need adjustment, and drive carefully until your satisfied that the job has been done correctly. |
