A quilting ruler is a very versatile tool. It allows the quilter to easily measure accurate blocks and lengths for quilting projects. And quilting rulers are not just useful for quilting! Use them to complete design projects, like drawing and scrapbooking, or use them around the house while working on your latest home improvement project.

The most common quilting rulers are square in shape, and available in sizes ranging from 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" to 20-1/2¡± x 20-1/2¡±, with the 6-1/2" x 6-1/2" ruler being the most popular size. Look for them at craft and fabric stores. Most quilting rulers are transparent, and some rulers have increments marked in both black and white to ensure the accurate reading of measurements. When the ruler is laid over a dark object, the white increments will appear clearly, and when the ruler is laid over a light object, the black increments will show.

Quilting rulers offer an alternative to basic rulers made of wood and metal, and in certain situations, you may even find a quilting ruler to be more useful than a tape measure. Here are some of the advantages of using a quilting ruler:

 - Square quilting rulers provide a quick way of checking an object to find out if it is perfectly square. Just place the ruler over the object, line up the ruler's increments with the edges of the object. Also, use a quilting ruler to check the accuracy of 90 degree angles.

 - Transparent quilting rulers allow you to take measurements by placing the ruler directly over the object that you want to measure. This helps in obtaining an accurate measurement, and is especially true if you are measuring the placement of photos on the page of a scrapbooking project, or measuring between the slats of a vent, for example. 

 - Most quilting rulers are made of sturdy, flexible plastic. Quilting rulers will conform to the shape of objects that are curved or concave. This flexibility allows for precise measurement of objects that are not flat. 

 - The thinness of a quilting ruler lets you to get into tight spaces with it. This saves the time spent on removing the object that is to be measured with a standard ruler - and some objects are not removable, so a quilting ruler can give more dexterity while working around or inside objects.

 - Quilting rulers are very thin, and this comes in handy while taking measurements in tight places. If  the length of the ruler can fit the space in question, it will probably fit width-wise, too.

 -  A quilting ruler with non-slip dots prevents the ruler from moving when it is placed on the surface of  fabric, or any object. The dots are located inside the quilting ruler, so they don't change it's thickness.

 - Lay quilting rulers end-to-end to increase length. To do this, overlap the increments for an accurate measurement. Align rulers with non-slip dots to ensure that they do not move while measurements are taken. 

 - Some quilting rulers have slots at increments that allow for cuts, and markings in pencil, fabric marker, ink, etc.

 - Quilting rulers that feature 60 degree angles make it easy to create simple triangles.
