When a hurricane is on its way, it is best to be prepared for whatever may happen. If you are not evacuated or plan to stay in your home to ride out the hurricane, there are things that you need to do in order to be ready and to stay safe. Here are some things that you should do and things you should have on hand just in case.
There are a few basic things that need to be done whether you will be evacuating or not. Learn about evacuation plans, evacuation locations and warning signs for your area. Make sure the authorities know of anyone with special needs in your home such as elderly or disabled family members. Keep a fire extinguisher and know where it is and how to use. You should also make sure that emergency numbers are posted at all phones. A homeowner should be prepared to turn off electricity and gas lines to the home should evacuation become necessary. Electricity should also be turned off if there is standing water or downed power lines in the immediate area.
You should also make sure that your home is well stocked with emergency supplies. You should have enough to sustain your family through the duration of the storm. This includes 5 gallons of water per person, enough non-perishable food for 3-5 days, and enough baby supplies if there is a baby in the house (formula, baby food, diapers, etc.). There should also be a well stocked first aid kit for any injuries that might occur and a manual of how to treat injuries. In case you lose electricity, you will need flashlights and battery powered radios in addition to extra batteries. You should also have enough bedding for everyone to protect against sleeping in cool dampness.
You should also have things to take care of the other needs of your family. Special medications should be well stocked so there is no need to try to get to a pharmacy during the worst of the storm. You should also keep wet wipes on hand should your home lose water, so that everyone can stay clean. In case there is water, personal hygiene products are also a must such as soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, etc. In case water is tainted, water purifying supplies such as chlorine tablets or unscented household bleach are necessary to have. Being prepared to leave also involves having an emergency kit in your car. This should contain much of what you keep in your home as well. Food is important as well as a first aid kit. You should also carry jumper cables, flares, tools and a fire extinguisher in case anything should happen to the car.
When just the threat of a hurricane occurs, there are steps you should take to be ready. Fill your gas tank in your vehicle and if you do not have a vehicle, arrange for a ride with family members or neighbors. Fill up your water containers and review your emergency plans with your family. You should make sure to keep your eyes on the news and your ears open for emergency sirens. Secure any items outside that may be damaged and board up your windows with plywood. Make sure that any livestock and pets are secured inside with enough food and water since they can not go with you to evacuation shelters. Adjust the temperature on your fridge to its coolest to help preserve the food. It is also a good idea to fill up all sinks and tubs with water should the water supply become tainted or stopped.
When the evacuation order comes in, there are also a few steps to follow prior to evacuating. Take only what is completely necessary. Leave pets in a safe place with a good supply of food and water. Turn off the gas, electric, and water to the house if there is time and try to disconnect all appliances to avoid electrical shock when the power returns. Also, make sure your car emergency kit is ready and in place and follow proper evacuation routes when leaving.
If you are not ordered to evacuate, there is a different set of steps to follow. If it is possible, it is best to monitor the news for frequent updates. This is where a battery powered radio or weather radio comes in handy. You should stay indoors until the authorities give the all clear to come out. You should also seek shelter in a room on the inside of the house. One without windows is preferable. Bathrooms and basements are the best places to seek shelter. Bathtubs make great places for shelter when covered with plywood. In case of your home getting damaged, you should still have a plan to evacuate to a public shelter or to a neighbors home. Hurricanes can be very dangerous. It is important to follow all the necessary steps to keep you and your family safe. Following the instructions of the authorities is also important. |
