When a new baby is on the horizon, the excitement of decorating a nursery is just one of the many pleasures that parents-to-be look forward to. Some couples run right out and buy all new furniture, while others may enjoy restoring family heirlooms. One of the major pieces of furniture that a nursery needs is a rocking chair. While there are many different styles of rockers available, including wicker rockers and wooden gliders, many new parents love the idea of adding an antique rocker to their baby’s room. However, many times an old rocker needs to be refinished. It is very important to refinish any furniture that has chipping paint because of the increased risk of lead poisoning, which can be highly toxic.
Refinishing an antique rocker doesn’t have to be that difficult. If your rocker has upholstery that needs replacing also, you should plan on refinishing the wood before you add new upholstery material. You might even want to try a reupholstering job yourself, especially if only the seat needs to be covered.
If your rocker has several coats of paint, varnish, or stain, then it will take a little more work to refinish. You will need a good paint or varnish remover, and these can purchased at any home improvement store. Before you get started, it is always a good idea to clean any dust and dirt from the wood. Once you begin applying the paint remover, you need to make sure that you are working in a well-ventilated area and wearing gloves. Be sure and work in safe area because the paint remover can damage walls or floor surfaces.
It is easier to refinish a piece of furniture if you work on small sections at a time. You should follow the directions on the paint remover, and you will probably have to wait a little while after applying it before you can begin scraping off excess paint. As you use a paint scraper, be careful that you don’t gouge the wood. You should work slowly and steadily. If your piece of furniture has several coats, it may take a couple of applications of paint remover to remove all of the finish.
Once you have removed all of the paint, you will need to clean the wood. You can buy professional strength wood cleaner for this. Because some antique rockers have carvings that collect dirt and dust, you may want to use a toothbrush to clean these nooks and crannies properly.
After you have completely cleaned the wood, you will need to decide what type of finish you want to place on the rocker. If the wood is in good condition, you may want to simply apply a stain that enhances the natural coloring of the wood. If you aren’t sure about the color, you can place a small amount of stain on an inconspicuous area of the wood. However, if the wood isn’t in the best shape, or you just want to change the color of the stain, you can apply any color that you like.
Some people prefer to paint their antique rockers in a color to match the nursery, such as pastel or primary colors. While this is your choice, keep in mind that if your rocker is very old and valuable, it might be better to try and maintain it as close to its original look as possible. If you do prefer to paint your rocker, be sure to use a lead-free paint. Acrylic based paints generally need to be sealed with some type of polyurethane sealant to help preserve the paint and color.
If you have a rocker that has its original finish still fairly intact, you may only need to clean it thoroughly. There are wipe-on stains that can be applied with typically good results as a cover-up for scratches and light water marks. Try to find a stain as close to the original color as possible.
If you want to try and recover the seat of your chair, you can do this quite easily. You don’t have to remove the old material if it is difficult to remove. You may need to add some more cushioning to the seat if the old cushion is worn, though. Once you have bought your material, wrap it around the seat top, and bring it up and under the seat. Fasten it by turning the rough edges in and stapling the material to the wood every six inches or so.
Adding a refinished chair to your baby’s nursery can be just the right touch. You can finish an old rocker without too much effort, and you will be happy you took the time to liven up an old piece of history for you and your child to enjoy. |
