After getting a new pet for yourself or your family, you can't just turn it loose at home and hope for good things. Chances are, over time, that you and your animal will come to an understanding. But there may be mishaps along the way.
Instead, take the short cut to a positive relationship by following these suggestions for bonding to the new creature in your household. Remember that all good things take time, so plan on being patient as your new relationship develops.
1. Feed your animal faithfully. Whether you have a fish, duck, or puppy, have the right kind of food on hand to make sure your pet remains happy and healthy. Feeding is one of the oldest ways on earth to win an animal's trust. So be sure to give your pet something that tastes good and is good for him.
2. Care for its needs. From cleaning the fish tank to litter training a kitten, ensure that your animal's primary hygiene and safety needs are met. Some pets seem to have an innate appreciation for this kind of attention, while others, like snakes and frogs, may be less inclined to notice. But your family and you will enjoy a clean, healthy pet and may spend more time with it for that reason.
3. Provide habit-forming training. Some small pets, like amphibians, are not suitable for training. But many others are. Some pet owners train a bird to whistle, a dog to do tricks, or a horse to come running when you whistle. Working with a pet to provide special training will bring the two of you closer together.
4. Come bearing gifts. Reward your pet with an edible treat or a playtime with you. Buy a cute collar or a warm winter sweater. Toss a ball or a catnip mouse. Animals enjoy spending time with humans who offer tasty snacks or fun times.
5. Share your feelings with a pet. Research shows that stroking a cat or dog can lower blood pressure. Caring for another living creature like a pet can help reduce anxiety, create a sense of interdependence, and add years of healthier living to your life. Talk to your dog, stroke the cat, or watch the fish swim. All of these things can benefit your health and well-being.
6. Have fun with your pet. Give it a name, spend time together, take photographs. You may want to add a paragraph or two to your journal or diary, or even write a short story for the newspaper or a pet magazine. Walk your dog or ferret, arm wrestle the kitty, and sing along with your bird. Both of you will enjoy it!
Owning a pet need not be all work and no play. Strive for a balance of pleasure and responsibility. Many people view their pets as extended family, but if you cannot do that, at least look at your pet as a friend. Some humans will let you down further and faster than your best animal friend. |
