Accessories are the sugar and spice of our wardrobes, adding fun and flavor to any outfit.  From birth, baby girls are decked out in hair bows made with ruffles, frills, eyelet lace, buttons, and ribbons.  A huge variety of ribbons are available: satin, grosgrain, gauze, wired or not wired, and single or double-faced.  The options of color, texture and size are virtually unending.  With little effort a baby girl can have a unique accessory for every item in her wardrobe.

     For baby girls blessed with very little hair, a band with interchangeable bows is a good option.  It will be necessary to purchase one half yard of stretchable lace.  Cut a piece to snugly fit the baby’s head and sew the ends together.  Around these joined ends, wrap and sew a loop of the lace.  Through this loop, different bows can be clipped as desired.  If the baby girl has enough hair for a clip to hold firmly, this step is not necessary.

     To make the actual bow, cut a piece of one-inch wide lace six inches long.  Sew a gathering stitch across the back edge of it.  Pull the gathering thread until the lace forms a circle.  With the thread still in tact, sew the ends of the circle together.  Choose a complimentary or coordinating one half-inch lace or ribbon and repeat this process.  Sew the smaller lace circle on top of the larger lace circle.  Tack a very small bow or a cute matching button to the center.  Hot glue a “clippie” to the back, and the bow is finished.  All that remains is to try it on and admire the results.  

     A large fluffy bow can actually be built from about one and a quarter yards of ribbon.  For this, you need an eight-inch length, a two-inch length of ribbon, a piece of floral wire, and of course the “clippie.”  Hold the length of ribbon pinched between the thumb and forefinger.  Make a five-inch loop and again catch the ribbon between the thumb and forefinger.  Repeat this process three more times.  Build two more loops using four inches of ribbon each.  Continuing to hold the looped ribbon between the thumb and forefinger, place the eight-inch piece on the bottom.  Loop the wire around the center of the bow being held and twist.  Both hands now being free, wrap the two-inch piece of ribbon around the bow, turning under the raw edges and sew or hot glue it securely.  Remove the wire at this point or simply clip the ends and leave it.  French cut the ends of the eight-inch piece on the bottom making two four inch tails for the bow.  Hot glue a “clippie” to the center of the back and it is now ready to attach to the baby girl’s hair or headband.  This bow can be built with single faced ribbon, but it will be necessary to twist before placing it between the thumb and forefinger each time.  

     This is a very fun project.  Bows can be made as simply or as intricately as desired.  Plain grosgrain ribbon can be used or sweet embellishments can be added.  Begin with a few basic generic bows, then go on to create something really special for a specific outfit.  Just remember to include inspiration and creativity among your supplies!
