Who doesn’t love a nice, big, fluffy, comfy body pillow? One shaped like a person can fill the bed until hubby gets home from his business trip or can calm fears of a small child at night. Choose an outfit for your body pillow: a complete set of long-sleeved pajamas and a pair of socks and maybe a nightcap. A one-piece sleeper with the feet in it works the very best, but you can get by with a pair of pajamas.
Fasten the pajama bottoms whether they have snaps or drawstring and use fabric glue to hold it shut. You can use hot glue to make the project quicker, but it won’t be washable. With fabric glue, you can throw the sleeping buddy in the washer. Now either glue the ankles of the pajama bottoms to the socks so that the pajamas hang over the socks, or glue the socks on the outside of the pajamas with the legs of the pajamas tucked into the socks.
Stuff the pajamas and socks with pillow stuffing. Stuff it well, beginning with the toes of the socks, working up into each leg and finally to the waist. You can save a little on the stuffing by filling a pair of pantyhose first and then inserting them into the pajamas and socks. The stuffing should be very firm, since it will smash down somewhat while using.
Now use the glue to fasten the shirt waist to the pajama waist. The shirt should have a scoop neck, like a tee shirt, but if it’s a button-down pajama top stuff a tee shirt first, and then put it into the pajama top. Stuff the arms of the shirt, then the waist, and upwards to the neck and shoulders.
Sometimes you have to work with the stuffing to get it just right. Rolling a large piece to put into the legs, or a rolled-up piece to place in the sleeves helps a little. Using large pieces gives a less lumpy look to the pillow buddy. Use another large piece for the rear, a very large piece for the chest, etc.
For the head use a piece of linen or knee-hi hosiery and stuff it in a round shape, like a head. When it’s stuffed well, tie the neck area off, and glue or stitch it onto the neckline of the shirt. At this point, you shouldn’t be able to see any of the stuffing around the neck of the shirt. If you can see the stuffing, use a piece of cloth or pantyhose to tuck into the area and glue into place to keep the stuffing in.
You can draw a face onto the cloth or purchase stick-on eyes, nose and mouth. You can also glue a nightcap of some sort on the doll’s head to cover the stocking, if that’s what you used for the head. For a girl pillow, add craft hair and then cover the ends with a hat or towel turban. A smaller version can be made for children using a few items from their existing wardrobe.
