A battery is the power source for many different items, such as a flashlight, a digital camera, the watch on your wrist, and even your car. Different usages require a variety of battery voltages, and your car requires a large, rectangular, twelve volt battery for its power.    

There are many reasons why you might need to disconnect the battery in your car. Maybe you need to replace it with a new one, or maybe you need to perform some maintenance work on the existing battery, or maybe you want to avoid having your car stolen. You might even need to disconnect the battery because your car alarm is going off and you can't stop it any other way! 

Whatever the reason may be, the first step before you disconnect the battery is to put on a pair of protective safety glasses. You should also wear a pair of long, heavy rubber gloves to protect your hands and forearms with. Since car batteries are filled with a corrosive lead-acid solution, they can be dangerous if they are not handled properly!          

The next step is to inspect the metal ends of the cables that are connected to the battery. If they are covered with a white powdery substance, that means they're corroded. You'll need to clean them thoroughly before you proceed. You can use a solution of water and baking soda along with a wire brush to clean the cable ends. You can also purchase a can of battery terminal cleaner at your local auto supply store to clean them with.    

Also, inspect the outside casing of the car battery. Look for any signs of lead-acid leakage. Carefully wipe up any leaks with an old rag or with a paper towel.   

Now that you have the battery cables cleaned, the third step is to finally disconnect them. Since the battery is filled with an electrical charge, you'll need to do this in a safe manner. That is, you can't just start unhooking cables at random! To avoid risk of an electrical shock, you must use a wrench to loosen the bolt on the cable of the negative side first! If you're not sure which side is the negative one, look for the cable that has the black wire. Or, check the battery. They are often marked (-) for negative, or (+) for positive. Find the negative side and the cable that's connected to it. 

Then, grab the cable end and slide it up and off of the battery terminal. Once that's done, you'll need to use the wrench to loosen the bolt on the positive side of the battery. The positive side has a red cable. After the bolt is loose, grab the cable end and slide it up and off of the battery terminal. Now that the battery is completely disconnected, you can use additional baking soda and water, and wire brush to clean off the terminals on the battery.   

When you reconnect the cable to the car battery, make sure that you place the ends on the terminals all the way down. And, use the wrench to tighten the bolts on the cable ends so they are secure. 

A word of warning here: after the positive (+) or red battery cable has been disconnected, in order to avoid seeing sparks, make sure that you DON'T let the end of the cable touch any metal parts on your car!  

There is another way you can disconnect your car from the battery. This requires the installation of a battery switch. This product can readily be found at your local auto parts store. The actual switch is turned on and off by the use of a key. Therefore, only you can control it! A battery switch is a great way to ensure that your car doesn't get stolen. It's also a handy device to use if you're going to store your car for a long period of time.
