Taking the time to groom your horse properly offers so many benefits. As you spend time taking care of your horse, you develop a closer relationship with him that is built on mutual affection and trust. Your horse will soon learn to look to you as his caretaker, and he will welcome your gentle touch. 

Before you ever put a saddle and bridle on your horse, you need to groom him thoroughly. There are several reasons for this. When you take the time to groom your horse, you are calming and settling him so that your ride will begin in a harmonious environment. He will learn to look forward to being ridden because he will receive extra attention from you both before and after the ride. 

The best place to groom your horse is when he is attached to cross-ties. If you don¡¯t have access to cross-ties, you can tie him to a sturdy pole, but you need to make sure your tie is a slip-knot that can be undone quickly in case of an emergency. As you groom your horse, take the time to talk to him in a calm, soothing manner. A good grooming for a horse is similar to a wonderful massage for you.

Make sure you have all of the grooming equipment that you will be using within arm¡¯s reach. Some of the equipment that can be used includes a curry comb, mane comb, body brush, sponges, sweat scraper, hoof pick, and possibly fly spray.  A horse should be groomed from his head to his hooves. 

You can use curry combs on well-muscled areas of the body. Don¡¯t use them on the horse¡¯s face, legs, or bonier parts. Take the curry comb in your hand and rub your horse in a circular motion. Dried sweat and dirt will loosen during this process. When you use the curry comb and brush vigorously, you are stimulating the circulation in the horse¡¯s skin and muscles. 

Once you have finished currying your horse, take the body brush and stroke him with long, firm motions. If the horse seems sensitive in certain areas of his body, use a more gentle motion. It is very important to brush under the horse¡¯s belly. This should dislodge clumps of dirt and anything else that might create a sore when the girth rubs against it. When you have thoroughly brushed your horse, take the curry comb and run it through the brush to remove dirt and hair. 

Next, you need to gently but firmly brush your horse¡¯s mane using the mane comb. You will also use the mane comb on the horse¡¯s forelock, which is the lock of hair that hangs over his forehead. You should not use the mane comb for his tail. You need to untangle the tail by hand. You can use the brush on the tail after you have untangled it. Use caution when you are brushing his tail. Never stand directly behind the horse, but instead stand to the side. Also, as you move around the horse to groom him, don¡¯t walk directly behind him. Even though he might seem very calm, something unexpected could happen that frightens him, and he might kick out. 

Now that you have finished grooming your horse¡¯s body, mane, and tail, it is time to concentrate on his hooves. You need to stand next to the hoof you want to clean, facing the rear of the horse. In order to pick up the hoof, you need to stroke your hand down the horse¡¯s leg, beginning at his thigh. Grasp his leg right where it meets the hoof and pick up the hoof. Prop the hoof on your knee and using your hoof pick, pick out any dirt, manure, and grass that are lodged in the hoof. You can also wipe the outside of the hoof with a soft cloth. You should have already located a blacksmith, who can take care of your horse¡¯s trimming and/or shoeing needs. 

Finally, take a sponge and gently wipe your horse¡¯s eyes and nose, and spray him with fly repellant that is specifically made for horses, taking care not to spray into his eyes. You are now ready to saddle and bridle your horse. Once you have finished your ride, you need to groom your horse again. While you might not spend as much time grooming him after your ride, it is still a beneficial habit to get into. When you spend some time grooming and talking to him after the ride, you are ending your time together on a calm, positive note. Taking the time to groom your horse properly is necessary to maintain his good health.
