Cats by nature are finicky creatures.  What one loves, the next one hates and what your tabby loved yesterday he won¡¯t touch today.  Here are a few cat treat recipes that even the most finicky of cats will love.  

With the addition of catnip, here¡¯s one recipe that is sure to please.

Basic Cat Treats

1 cup whole wheat flour 

2 tablespoons wheat germ 

1/4 cup soy flour 

1/3 cup dry milk 

1 teaspoon catnip 

1/3 cup water

2 tablespoons Butter 

1 Egg (slightly beaten)

1 tablespoon unsulfured molasses 

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.  In a medium sized mixing bowl, mix together the wheat flour, wheat germ, soy flour, dry milk and catnip.  Add the water, butter, egg and molasses and mix well.  Form the dough into a disk and using a rolling pin, roll the dough out on a floured surface.  Cut the dough into small pieces with either a sharp knife or small biscuit cutter.  Place on a well-greased cookie sheet and bake for 20 minutes.  Store in an airtight container.

All cats love fish.  Here are two recipes to satisfy any fish cravings your cat may display.  The addition of Brewer¡¯s yeast will add essential fatty acids and B-complex vitamins needed for a glossy coat.  It is also known for its ability to control fleas. 

Sardine Treats

1 can sardines, packed in olive oil

1 cup whole grain bread crumbs

1 egg (slightly beaten)

1/2 teaspoon brewer's yeast 

Preheat the oven to 325 degrees.  Pour the sardines and oil into a medium sized mixing bowl and mash the sardines into small pieces.  Add the bread crumbs, the egg and brewer¡¯s yeast and mix well.  Drop 1/4 teaspoon of the mixture onto a greased cookie sheet and bake for about 7 minutes.  Store in the refrigerator in an airtight container.

Tuna Treats

1 8 oz. can tuna packed in oil

2 cups white or yellow cornmeal 

2 cups flour 

3/4 cup water 

2/3 cup canola or vegetable oil 

1/2 teaspoon salt 

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  In a small mixing bowl, mix the cornmeal and flour.  In a separate bowl, mix together the tuna with the oil, the water, vegetable oil and salt.  Add the flour mixture a small amount at a time, mixing well to make sure the dry ingredients completely incorporate into the wet mixture.  Roll the dough on a floured surface to about 1/4 inch thickness.  Cut into small pieces and bake on a greased cookie sheet for 25-30 minutes. Store in the refrigerator in an airtight container.

For cats that love crunchy bites, here¡¯s an easy recipe for even the most finicky feline.

Crunchy Treats

1 cup whole wheat flour 

2 teaspoon wheat germ 

1/4 cup bran flakes 

1/4 cup soy flour 

1 tablespoon unsulphured molasses 

2 tablespoons vegetable or canola oil

1 teaspoon salt 

1 teaspoon sage 

1/2 teaspoon bone meal

1/3 cup water 

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  In a medium mixing bowl, mix together the dry ingredients:  flour, wheat germ, bran flakes, soy flour, salt, sage and bone meal.  In a separate mixing bowl, mix together the wet ingredients:  molasses, vegetable oil, and water.  Knead the dough by hand until the mixture comes together.  Roll the dough on a floured surface until it¡¯s about 1/4 inch thick.  Cut into narrow ribbons and bake for 25-30 minutes or until lightly browned.  

Note:  When making homemade cat treats, stay away from milk or pork as both can cause diarrhea in cats. Chocolate is another no-no for cats (and dogs).  The chemical makeup of chocolate can, in rare cases, be deadly to our feline friends.
