It may or may not be the reason they¡¯re called guinea ¡°pigs,¡± but there is no doubt: guinea pigs love to eat. They will eat many different kinds of fruits and vegetables, and a varied diet is key to keeping them healthy and long-lived. Any pet owner wants to feed treats, so what do guinea pigs like and what is good for them?

  Most veterinarians advise that treat-type foods compose no more than 20 percent of a piggy¡¯s daily diet. So, while these little creatures will love what their owners give them, they may not necessarily need it. Owners should keep this in mind when faced with a begging guinea pig, since they have mooching down to a fine art. 

  Small fruits such as blueberries, grapes, apple slices, pitted, sliced cherries, and most any fruit, cut into bite-sized portions, will satisfy a guinea pig. Make sure any large seeds are removed, since these may still be small enough to choke the animal. 

  Carrots, either baby or cut into small pieces, are usually loved by piggies near and far. They will also eat most green, leafy vegetables and parsley. All fruits and vegetables should be washed before offering, and very large greens can be torn into smaller pieces. A good rule is to cut veggies about thumb-sized before feeding. 

  Guinea pigs should not receive potato products, beans, onions or cabbage. The latter veggies can cause gastric problems. They also should not be fed anything with meat or dairy, nor should candy of any kind be offered. 

  Nuts are also another popular treat, but these should not be offered as frequently, since they are fatty. Some piggies will eat them, some won¡¯t. It just depends on the animal¡¯s personal taste.

  Most pet supply stores also offer various treat sticks for guinea pigs. These are usually composed of dried fruits, nuts and seeds, bound together with honey or peanut butter. These are good for the animals, since they add a variety to the diet. Some of these treats come in little balls, some sticks come in long bars, some in short. These can be broken off and offered to the animal in smaller portions. Some are packaged with a plastic tab on the end that allows them to be attached to the cage bars, thereby keeping them out of the bedding. These are ideal, since the owner can leave the treat in the cage and the animal can nibble at will. These treat sticks have the added advantage of keeping the front incisors worn down to a manageable level. 

  Chew blocks made of wood or alfalfa cubes are other popular treats. They too, help wear down the incisors and the alfalfa hay is a good addition to the diet. Like all rodents, piggies love to chew, and these treats help satisfy that urge. They can also be left in the cage bars, for chew blocks, or in the bowl, for hay cubes. 

  As a rule, treats that have been in the bowl or cage bottom. for more than an hour or so should be removed, to keep them from being contaminated with urine or feces from the bedding. 

  When in a pet store, owners should look for treats especially formulated for guinea pigs. This will ensure the contents are safe for the animals, since not all rodents can eat the same things. 

  Owners should offer a variety of treats. However, they may find that the pig turns his or her little nose up at something. The offending item should be removed, and can be offered again at a later date. Like children, guinea pigs are sometimes funny about what they will and won¡¯t eat. 

  Since treats are an enjoyable part of a guinea pig¡¯s day, a loving owner can give them accompanied with affection, ensuring a happy, healthy pet.
